PC Laptop Suggestions
#21
I have had very good luck with Toshibas. Just got a new one on sunday. Office Depot for 399. I did not need a new one, just wanted another one. I have had bad luck with HP and Dells. They seem to have issues after the warranty was over. I no longer buy the top of the line. I use my notebook everyday and travel with it. I have a netbook, but perfer the larger notebook.

I am not a gamer. I use my computers for email, surfing, and photoshop. Also for school work. So the cheap ones work for me.

That's a solid buy for the price. The Intel Pentium processor T4400 is considered Intel's "lower end" dual core, but it outperforms the AMD equivalent. It looks like it has all the bells and whistles and more RAM than most people could ever use.

Note the absence of a 802.11n wireless card, this means you will continue to use the previous slower standard (g) as N becomes more popular. Not a big deal for most unless you intend to game with it wireless.

****Note the absence of Microsoft office (Word, powerpoint, etc). Open office and abiword provide viable alternatives that can open, edit, and save, .doc files; however, you cannot modify or view .docx files. Microsoft works is not the industry standard software and many cannot read the file format. Microsoft office is expensive! However, you can pick up older copies of 2003 and 2000 on craigslist for cheap though (often under $30). If you can use 97, it may be $5. *****

OpenOffice is a fabulous program. All the versions I've used do allow you to view, modify, and save (in a different format) .docx files. I'm not fond of Microsoft Word, especially the newest one. :ack:

OpenOffice is an excellent alternative with just as many (if not more) excellent features. It is far more customizable as well. Plus, it's free. Big Grin

Wait. Docx files? As in MS word 2007 files? When did this happen and are you sure? I haven't checked for at least 6 months, but open office hasn't had that ability yet and I wasn't sure if they ever would.

I wasn't fond of word 07 either, and then I took a quick online class and changed my mind.
