CLEP Algebra: Polynomial Word Problems
#1
On the CLEP Algebra exam, are there going to be questions like "The average discharge at the mouths of the Amazon River is 4,200,000 cubic feet per second. How much is discharged from the Amazon River in 1 yr? Express the answer in terms of scientific notation."

I can sort of do this with a calculator (the only calculator I have that can handle such large numbers expresses the answer in scientific notation by default, so it skips the last step, converting to scientific notation), but I find such word problems intimidating. Will I have to face such questions on the test? Thanks.

I haven't taken the test yet, but there are no questions like this on the test. Don't forget, that you will not be able to use your own calculator:mad:!

Well, yes, but I understand very few of the questions require calculations, and that there's an online scientific calculator present. Which should be included with the CLEP Sampler at CLEP: Preparing.

You will have word problems, but I do not believe you will have any related to scientific notation. I believe every College Algebra exam, or version of the exam, have 3 to 5 word problems.

I honestly cannot remember any scientific notation problems, but I am sure there was atleast one. They would be normal problems though, such as:

Express 0.0000567 in scientific notation or express 1,000,000,000 is scientific notation.
