Question on seminar graduate course
#1
I want to know what you need to do on seminar graduate course. You need to do research on a topic or couple topics assignments. It will require to take in order to graduate. I never took a seminar course, so I want to prepare to gathering topics to write a good research paper.

What the course requirements are will vary by school and program. No one can give you specifics unless you say which school and which program.

It is for my MBA program, my school is from Missouri State University. It requires to take seminar course which I never took this course before, so I want to ask the group who took it and they can explain me.

Graduate seminar courses are basically the "taught" part of a traditional graduate degree program as opposed to the "research" part of the degree. They are often taken before the research part as a means to prepare you for the research requirements. For example, in a doctoral program, you will probably have a seminar course on how to do research, another on how to develop and finalize your thesis, another on how to write your dissertation, etc. Before you get to that part you will likely have seminar courses that cover the area of study for your degree to make sure you're capable of doing the later work.

A graduate seminar course is usually a combination of lectures and discussions that help you build advanced knowledge in your subject area and make connections with the faculty and other students. They are unlikely to be a passive process since my understanding is that they tend to require active engagement and collaboration with the other students.

As far as how to prepare, they are similar to other traditional classes so there shouldn't be any surprises. This basically comes down to: (1) You do the required assignments before class (usually means a lot of reading, maybe writing a paper or doing a project); and (2) you come to class prepared to engage with the instructor and other students to discuss the assignments and/or ask questions. The specifics of each seminar course will be different depending on the subject matter.

If this is a writing seminar or a thesis seminar or something along those lines, they will usually have you come in with some idea of what you are supposed to be focused on, or they may give you a specific topic and ask you to come up with your own take on it. Either way, you should know what you need to do ahead of time by looking at the syllabus or course schedule.

Hopefully that is helpful.

Merlin covered this well already, but I can add that I took a seminar as my final degree requirements at Tulane. It was all very manageable for an upper-level and early grad-level course, but I'm not sure if your MBA program would be structured to include assignments like case studies.

Basically, we were a small cohort with assigned readings each week--somewhere in the 100-page range. We'd have three-hour student-led discussions each meeting, with short analysis papers due in 75% of the meetings. The professor of this course honed in on gender, while other seminars with other professors focused on other themes. All of this culminated in a half-hour presentation on a topic to the class with a defense of our choices.

I remember having to follow up some super serious discussion about FGM with my overview of gender in video games. The main takeaway for me was that it's really tough to pivot from that toward 8-bit Princess Peach, so hopefully your seminar goes better.

In addition to what has already been said, it really all depends on which seminar course you're going to take from MSU. Each of the seminar courses essentially is a "critical evaluation and analysis of theory, research and practice". As per their site, here are the courses you can select from and need to complete the degree. Link: https://mba.missouristate.edu/Courses.htm

In short, my description of a seminar course is similar - it's an interdisciplinary course that students need to demonstrate critical thinking, collaborate with fellow peers, and display or build their research skills. In the case of MSU, they're AACSB, but their MBA doesn't seem to have a capstone/thesis requirement, so I would assume this Seminar is going to be similar to a capstone/thesis.

So, my question to you is, which seminar "or concentration" in the MBA are you choosing? I ask because, it determines your elective courses you need to take. You need 24 required credits, 3 credits seminar, 6 credits electives. I'll explain below...

What interests me the most in this program is the ability/option for a GOB Graduate Certificate en route to the MBA for FREE! It even shows in the program requirements page, Link: https://mba.missouristate.edu/ProgramRequirements.htm

There is a flaw to their wording, as they mentioned "most GOB certs do not require additional coursework" but I was only able to find a select few, the majority in fact required more courses past the 33 credits required!!

The major one that interests me, is the Grad Cert in Computer Info Systems and the requirement is the ITC790 Seminar. Each cert requires 4 courses only, for this particular one, you can get it en route with everything including in the MBA required courses.
You just need to use the 6 elective courses to choose, two ITC requirements and you're done!

Ah, I didn't know they allow two concentrations... I see, I see, so you can get a GOB Graduate Cert in Computer Info Systems en route without doing extra work. I wonder if you can get two Certs with the Finance option added, I don't recall that is friendly enough to just add two elective courses, otherwise it would be worth it.

I need to reach out with my advisor. Can you explain me what thing you need to do on the seminar course? Is it a research paper for the course? Please let me know if I am wrong.
