Urbanna & Cederic,
Thanks for the great information about the World Conflicts test. I had not planned on taking any EC exams, but after reading this thread I've changed my mind. The feedback is so detailed that I feel I already know half the test already. Plus the fact my last two Dantes tests were history related and I'll be taking Rise and Fall shortly. You'll given my some new hope, because I tought I was going to have to take some traditional classes. Thanks again.
P.S. I used the forum search function to find this thread. It works great!

Hi everyone,
I need your advice about this exam.I want to take it somewhere next to next week.
I am using the Idiot's Guide to World Conflicts.I want to make an A on this one because of my low GPA.The book is very interesting and i am also using Wikipedia apart from advice and links in this wonderful thread but i saw another thread today that said this is not going to be enough to make an A.
It said the exam covers a lot about International Relations and this is not covered in the book.Do you think I will need a separate book for that.
Are there any more links for topics on International Relations? My original plan was to use this book and Wikipedia and the links...but now i am not sure what to do.
If i order another book from amazon i will have to postpone my exam.
Please advice,
Thanks,
Adoncia

In my opinion the Idiots guide is not sufficient to get an A on this test. You really need a book that focuses on IR theory. The books that Excelsior recommends for this exam are not big thick textbooks. They are small and about 200-300 pages long, so you should be able to knock one out pretty quickly.
The EC content guide is divided up into 3 sections. Pay particular attention to the third section (i can't remember what the titles are). I took that part for granted, and that is what cost me the A.

From earlier this thread...
Regarding Excelsior recommended sources:
Stoessinger-"Why nations go to war", great book , very readable, great for the details of the conflicts/wars. Short on theory, though, except for his.
Nye-"Understanding International Conflicts", this is an excellent book on analysis of international relations, but if you don't live, eat, breathe IR, then it can be a little tedious. Nye also has a lecture series at the "Teaching Company" called "Must History Repeat the Conflicts of the 20th Century". It is very good for details, theory and analysis, but it only covers WWI, WWII, and the Cold War! His lecture style is a little stiff so it can be a slow go.
Ziegler-"War, Peace and International Politics", best of the 3, his writing style is great for a beginner in international relations. If you only get one, get this one!
Hope this helps.

I took the written version.
Well my experience is different than most. I read both "Why Nations Go to War" (great book BTW!), and I read "Understanding International Conflicts." (Snooze Fest!) I also shelled out $34 for the Excelsior photo-copy book of essays on international conflict. (Rip OFF!) The problem is I studied these in August/early Sept and took the test today. Long story but anyway, I don't have the books with me and took it anyway while I'm home. I think I did well. If you read those books you'll be fine. I won't get my results for a week or so. I'll post my result then.
I came across these topics:
Unity Dam
Sierra Leone, 1999
Operation Haven
Iran/Iraq war (causes, US involvement)
Clash of the Civilizations
Truman Doctrine (derived from what)
Votes and makeup of UN security council and perm. members
Kin Country Syndrome
"Torn Country"
Article 51, UN Charter
Defining Terrorism in French Revolution
Definitely know your differences between state moralist, realists, and liberalism. Understand multilateralism, bipolar states, balance of power/terror etc.
Good luck!

I passed this exam with an "A" on 2/16/09. The previous posts were helpful. I browsed the Idiots Guide and read Nye's and Ziegler's books. More than I needed to do I think. The exam is straight forward and should not be taxing for the student who prepares a reasonable amount.
