However, he is unable to submit the next assignment until the previous one is graded, and we've been waiting a week for the current one (only 2 pages) to be graded. That's frustrating.
Contact them and ask them to expedite it.
I could, but ... I'm partially testing them to see how long it actually takes. If this is a pattern, others might not want to take this course. There's no way he could get it done in the 8 weeks, but thankfully they do allow the 1 month extension.

Does it show how many assignments there are and how long for each? The syllabus only mentions a final paper of 6-8 pages, I believe! Thanks!

Yes. There are 4 Units. They each contain 2-3 challenges (videos followed by tests) and 2 Touchstones, which are the writing part. The Touchstones are 2-3 page papers, or formatting your outline or bibliography, and the final Touchstone is your final 6-8 page research paper.
He just got his assignment back (kinda figures they'd watch this thread and as soon as I said something it was graded!) and the grading was fair. It was lower than i'd expected, but when I read the course expectations I saw where my son had gone wrong.

If I’m understanding you, it’s 6 smaller papers (2-3 pages each) then the final of 6-8 pages, is that right?

Sort of. The outline, for example, isn't really a written paper, but is still one of the assignments. So, 5 written assignments followed by the research paper draft and then the research paper final.
