My advice: take the TECEP exam, it's pretty easy.

You hit on all my concerns. If TECEP is the better option, that’s the route I’ll go. Thanks

From the description, the TECEP looks like a monster to take. How much are you actually supposed to write vs. how much is multiple choice? I'm going to try to do Sophia because it's free, but it'd be nice to have a backup just in case that falls through. I'm still having issues with Sophia Eng. Comp I. Fingers crossed that I'll actually get a grade this time.

Well, that’s concerning. I may have to do Sophia as well. I did English Comp 1 through them and it was o.k. I’m really dreading the 7 papers required for II though. Good Luck finishing your class.

Just take the course at ModernStates as prep and review any other resources you can get online free.

My CLEP offices are closed unfortunately.

I finally opened up the ASU course. Judging by the syllabus, it's actually not too bad. The individual papers/projects don't make up a huge part of your grade. By my calculations, you only need to get an average of about 50% on each one in order to pass, so long as you do decently in the other areas:

Writer’s Journals 10%
Participation Assignments 5%
Writing Project #1- Final Draft 4%
Writing Project #2 - Final Draft 4%
Writing Project #3 - Final Draft 4%
Writing Project #4 - Final Draft 8%
Writing Project #5 - Final Draft 4%
Writing Project #6 - ePortfolio - Final Draft 6%
Content Mastery 15%
Quizzes 40%

Estimated: Journals @ 80%, participation @ 100%, each project @ 50%, content mastery @ 100% (it's impossible to get less than 100%), quizzes @ 90% = total grade of 79%. When you just need the credits and don't care about the grade, that's going to be good enough. It's still a lot of work, but there's no proctoring (unlike with SL or the TECEP) and you know when you'll finish the course (unlike Sophia and having to wait indefinitely for grading). Considering that you don't have to pay for the whole thing unless you like your grade, it's totally going to be worthwhile for a lot of people.
