Wow, super cheap $67 at BYU, if you can take it
#1
Seems like a great deal, $67 a credit hour, you need to put up with the pathways program which may be an LDS indoctrination.

After pathways program, you still pay only $67 credit hour for BYU online.  The only other way around is to take 15 hours on campus at B&M BYU.

The price is good, the weekly 2-3 hour meetings at your local LDS church not so much if you aren't mormon.

Never knew the LDS were racists, or at least in the past they were.

My guess, your grade is sort of based on the time spent at weekly meetings, so if you are not Mormon or easily converted to you will not pass.

Once a racist, maybe still a racist.

That's silly.  If they were racist, then you wouldn't pass because you were black (or whatever race they didn't like).

I doubt that they will grade you on your weekly meetings, but I'm guessing they know that if they can get you to go every week, that they can wear you down.  It's a good way to get impressionable non-mormon kids in there, in the hopes of converting them.

Sorry, kinda mis-spoke.  I'm not saying they are racist on skin color, at least not anymore, but if you are not a Mormon or they think you could never be a Mormon, forget about it.

Of course it will be consistent and pro-Mormon, that's kinda the point. If I were Mormon, I'd be pretty disappointed if it weren't. I attended a Jesuit Catholic school for my graduate work - I'm not finding this as shocking as you that a college with a clear religious statement would include that in their courses. Still, their Indy study catalog is robust and not terribly expensive- I also expect it would be a lot more neutral in terms of doctrine.

It would probably be very interesting. Learning something doesn't mean that you have to agree with it or follow it. A person could just attend and say that they belonged to a different religious group and just wanted to learn. They would probably love it.

My local LDS church has a microfilm library and I order films from the big genealogy library in Utah. I just tell the people I'm Catholic, thanks for the microfilm and start reading.

Mormons are nothing if not polite. I know, I was raised LDS. If you really wanted to do this, and were up front that you didn't intend to be converted, nobody would be upset. Yes, they would keep trying, but no one would be trying to exclude you in any way.

LDS Institutes are always placed strategically at college campuses so that Mormon students can take religious courses along with their regular curriculum. One of the side benefits is that the Institute has it's own parking lot so students don't have to buy permits or stress about finding a spot near campus. A few non-Mormons will sign up just to get guaranteed parking. They do insist you come to class, however.

I grew up Mormon and I would avoid it. Mormons really are the nicest people, but the missionary work is a strong part of their faith. From sending young men and women all over the world to find converts, to teaching that "every member a missionary," you'll be fresh meat if you're attending church.

I don't mean that to offend anyone who is Mormon, and some of the coolest people I know are Mormon, but to say that it's everyone's responsibility to "spread the gospel" is an understatement. Stay away unless you're considering the church as an option.

Like Jen, I also attended Jesuit grad school. I would have never known if they didn't talk about how my MBA was infused with Jesuit values. There is no comparison between the two. I have never heard of a Jesuit trying to convert anyone.

Lastly, though I will say that even though Mormons seem to be varying shades of white, I have never met any Mormon that was a racist. They really are good people if you can get past the unusual history and dogma.

Once a racist, maybe still a racist.

The Church of Latter Day Saints did have a racist policy up until 1978, and the references to skin color in their canonical books would make any thinking person uncomfortable. There are some Mormons who aren't racist and some who are; it's the same among Christians. But, some of the older Mormons do hold on to old beliefs that come from their church.

I wouldn't mind taking a BYU course, but I wouldn't waste time participating in something I think is ridiculous. I have way too many other things to do.
