Teens at EC or TESC
#1
Has anyone had a problem with a teen taking exams or registering with EC or TESC prior to having their HS diploma? My son will graduate in June, but is ready to start testing and I'm worried they might disallow the exam credits if they were obtained prior to having his HS diploma. I know several young homeschool students here have done this, but I believe they had their HS diploma already, just earlier than most. Any feedback on how to handle this so he gets all the credit he deserves is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking he should test and accumulate credits, but not register at either school until he graduates, then register and transfer all his credits in. He was hoping to complete an ASLS degree prior to graduation, but I'm not sure that is actually possible. Any suggestions? This is such a knowledgable board I know someone has been in this situation and can point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Marianne, if he tests now the test will be allowed if has graduated or not. Clep exams are good for 20 yrs. I know people that use Clep and DSST exams as part of the home school course of study. They are getting double duty out of these exams.

You might also want to look at COSC. Apply to Charter Oak State College and complete your degree They require that applicants are at least 16 and have 9 college credits. My DS will be doing an associates degree and then going off to B&M school so he can do all of his pre-pharmacy requirements. COSC is cheaper than TESC and for the AS or AA, only requires the Cornerstone class, which sounds pretty simple.

I still think that he'll try TESC first, but I'm not entirely sure yet..

Edit to add: Unless you think he can complete all of his tests by June, there's really no reason to enroll him in school yet. In fact, there is a good reason not to - which is that once he enrolls, he's basically got one year to complete everything before he needs to pay enrollment fee for year 2. I would wait to see his testing pace and then have enough credits under his belt before he applies. This will cost you a lot less $$

In most states, homeschoolers are nix on the diploma altogether. In Ohio your transcript and ACT/SAT just kind of serve as your surrogate diploma. However, due to the peculiar homeschool circumstance, we can still say that we have a diploma on applications and stuff.... 'tis a little confusing. If only the whole world would acknowledge our superiority and convert. Confusedmilelol:

In my completely uninformed opinion, I would guess that it is a no-problem situation.

How is DS doing, anyway? I actually just came across your old thread and was going to bump it before I saw this one Big Grin

Many high school students earn college credit through testing or classes. Often this is called Dual Enrollment or some such name. He can take tests and classes now.

Just to keep things simple, I'd suggest he do his regular June graduation and then enroll, perhaps in the summer before his peers begin freshman year. This will look traditional, but highly motivated. At that point, he can whip out his associate's degree and move onward and upward!
