Yep it has a huge endowment, up there with the rest of the top schools in the US. Higher than Columbia and close to UPenn.

It's well-known in Texas that University of Texas and Texas A&M would have higher rankings if it weren't for the Top 7% Rule or whatever it is right now. For a long time, it was the Top 10% Rule. If you graduate in the Top 10% of your high school class in Texas, you earn automatic admission to any public university in Texas. This has helped disadvantaged students get into UT and A&M. This, however, has hurt these schools' rankings since U.S. News looks at SAT/ACT scores, and disadvantaged students tend to have lower scores.

This is one of the reasons why I tell people to look at the rankings of individual programs. Even though UT and A&M aren't ranked as high as they should be overall because the State of Texas wanted to put less emphasis on admissions testing, these two schools still rank very high in specific fields.

UT is a Public Ivy; A&M has one of the largest and strongest alumni networks. Also, remember that Texas is an oil state, and A&M has a petroleum engineering program. Naturally, many A&M graduates will be seen in high-paying oil positions.
