Nice! I wonder if this can be used for people that just want to finish a bunch of self paced courses quick and cheap to be transferred elsewhere?

“Q: Will my Academy courses transfer to other schools?
A:
Yes, in many cases. Through our partnership with course provider StraighterLine, most Academy courses have been reviewed by the ACE Credit Recommendation Service. ACE CREDIT’s College and University Network is a group of more than 2,000 higher education institutions that consider ACE credit recommendations for transfer to degree programs. Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) and CompTIA certification courses for the WGU IT school receive credit in transfer to WGU, but are not yet currently eligible for the ACE network or an ACE transcript. Which courses are transferable is ultimately determined by the receiving school and any articulation agreements it has with other course providers. Because WGU Academy is primarily set up to articulate with WGU, if your primary goal is to attend some other school, make sure the courses will transfer. An Academy Enrollment Counselor may be able to help, but we can’t make specific promises about other schools’ transfer policies.”

Does WGU normally subcontract out to Straighterline? Who do they use for the certs?

Interesting. But a very limited number of courses available depending on which degree you choose. I wonder if they'll open up more as you get through these?

Hmmm, it may also be a cheap way to get CompTIA A+. Normally that cert is $170 each for 2 exams not counting any practice/prep materials, but if someone can get what they need in 1 month for $150 that makes it a no brainer.

They make you take English Comp I before you can do anything else. If you can't get through that in a month, then you'll be way overpaying for that course. BUT, on the flip side, you probably wouldn't be a good candidate for WGU in the first place, so better to find that out up front.

Also, that PACA course is required, but 0 credits. And it's a minimum of 4 weeks, you have to meet with your advisor 3x, and you have to meet with your cohort group weekly. That would really annoy me.

From the FAQs:

"(PACA) is required for guaranteed admission into WGU"

"It’s possible to finish your required Academy courses in as little as a month, but you should probably plan on 3 to 4 months."

"Through our partnership with course provider StraighterLine, most Academy courses have been reviewed by the ACE Credit Recommendation Service"

Maybe if you can skip the paca if you tell them you want to transfer to a different School? Just a thought. It seems that all the courses except for MTA and CompTIA are actually straighterline courses and I've heard of many people here getting through SL courses within a few days.

Would be cool if wgu academy adds a bunch more gen Eds or other courses.

So aside from the IT cert stuff, this is just Straighterline re-packaged at a cheaper price? Sounds like a good deal.

Seems like it.

I like the concept of giving people a cheap, no commitment test drive.
