average time to finish WGU - opinions wanted
#11
To clarify your comment, is a Competency Unit (CU) at WGU typically to 3 semester credit hours?  Did you accomplish 30 CU (90 cr hrs) all through CLEP or what other sources did you use? It looks like some of the Gen Ed. classes are not offered through CLEP, but, are offered via Study.com, SL, Davar Academy, etc?  I only observed about 4-5 classes if that many she could not do through CLEP?

A CU is (roughly) equivalent to a credit hour.  Most classes are 3-4 CUs.  I CLEP'ed out of 4 courses (Eng. 1&2, Intro to IT, and Geography (using the Intro to Psych CLEP)).

On average, how many classes did you get through per week/month? Did you find you worked on avg amount of time or in spurts where you had more time or felt motivated?  I know she would likely not have much of a social life outside of being a mom and working 40 hrs a week.  Thankfully, our kids are 13 and 17 so fairly self sufficient.

I finished one class a week on average.  Bear in mind I went for a cybersecurity degree and am VERY familiar with the material.

Did you also move through the remaining 30 CU's (15 cr hours) in 6 months at WGU or did it take you longer/shorter?  I think it would be more likely she would take about 6 months to 1 year to complete remaining CLEP GL/business core classes and 6 months of business upper level core programs.

I came in with 67 CUs, needing 55 (15 classes) to complete the degree.  I completed the 15 classes in just under 4 months.

In the Bachelor of Mktg Mgmt at WGU for her, I had planned on her being able to complete all (if not most or else use Study.com/SL/Khan Academy...cheap/free credit for rest of GL/business core classes) the remaining 78 credit hours (26 classes) using free CLEP tests from Modern States and the free voucher.

Quigongene,

To clarify, I believe she would need take 26 (78 cr. hours) remaining CBE exams/courses before she transferred in and started at WGU to maximize the cost savings.

There are about 12 courses you take take for that degree through CLEP (I can't remember how many courses she already has that might be duplicates with that).

The remaining may be gotten through Study.com, SL, DSST, whatever.

Then, there are 31 credits that can't be transferred in, that she would have to do through WGU.

Quigongene,

I am attaching her credit evaluation for WGU.

She received 12 credits in the areas of English Composition I and II (6 credits), Intro. to Sociology (3), and Art of the Theater (3 towards Humanities credit). I am cross referencing the courses she can take for CLEP through what is offered on Modern States.

https://modernstates.org/course/

I believe that anything not offered through Modern States for free with CLEP reimbursement can be satisfied  either through Saylor or Study.com. Does this sound right?

My methodology is to print off the evaluation and in the "Satisfied By column, write the source i.e. CLEP, Study.com, etc.

Saylor

https://www.saylor.org/credit/#courses

Study.com

https://study.com/directory/school/Weste...rsity.html

I think the courses at Saylor can meet the rest of the Gen Ed or Business Core/Lower Level requirements and I think they are a better choice as they are free as compared to Study.com?  Thoughts.

WGU takes up to 90 credit hours/competency units via alternate source (i.e. CLEP, Saylor) and then the remaining credits *must* be taken at WGU.  She has 12 credits which leaves 78 credit hours/CU's or about 26 CBE's or exams.  The plan would be for her to take these free or nearly free courses over the next 6-12 months and get all her 78 credit hours transferred into WGU.  Then, we would look at sometime in the first 6 months of 2020 for her to enroll at WGU and complete her remaining 31 credits in 6 months at WGU.  What do you think?

I think the 31 Credits/CU's you are speaking about are the Non-Transferable (Business Core) courses towards the bottom of the Evaluation...correct?

For a Bachelor's in Marketing Management, it sounds like she could get the degree for $3,370 plus any ACE transcript costs.  I am guessing the ACE transcript costs might cost in the neighborhood of $100-200.  If she qualifies for a scholarship (i.e. Hero within or something like it), she could get her degree for under $3000 (plus any ACE transcript fees).  This is a really good deal.  Now, I am going to present her with option or the BALS from likely EC or COSC.  I know they are not the same.  Even though it costs more, I think she may like the idea of the BALS degree as it may quicker to complete.

Thanks,

EducationSeeker

And ace transcript is only $20 is if you save up your classes and only do it once.

Have her do a few courses from straighterline you get an automatic 500/term scholarship.

Do the CSM learn course its only $39 and will count for math. Highly recommend that course it is will done and one the best courses I've ever done through alternative credit.

I have limited experience with Saylor.  The one test I took through them (networking) I failed (I've been in the IT field for over 25 years....I'm well versed in the topic, the information was just WRONG).  They may work for you, and I might just be jaded ;-).  Beyond that, your methods seem pretty sound.

Take a look at the spreadsheet on the last page of my journey thread.  I think you're being too focused on the "78 CUs" and not the courses required.  Use mine as a template and lay out which courses she needs and where she'll get them (CLEP, SDC, Saylor, etc.).  Also do some research on the WGU class itself (for example, using the WGU subreddit).  You could spend an exorbitant amount of time finding an alternative to a class that could probably be taken in a couple of days with WGU (I'm looking at you, Critical Thinking and Logic).

I think the 31 Credits/CU's you are speaking about are the Non-Transferable (Business Core) courses towards the bottom of the Evaluation...correct?

WGU has a requirement to take 30 CUs from them.  The only non transferable course for my degree was the capstone, but they still wouldn't have allowed me to bring in over 90 credits.

A business degree is infinitely more valuable than a BALS IMHO, but if your wife is just checking the "I need a degree" box, then yes, a BALS is fine.  Also, as natshar said, sending the ACE transcript is $20.

I agree with quigongene a business degree is more valuable than a BALS.  So why not get a BSBA from COCS instead of a BALS - why are you limiting those schools to only BALS? Here is a good thread on getting a BSBA from COSC (no CLEP, but CLEP could be used in the places where appropriate) - https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Transcript

Also COSC will take NCCRS credits which open up more very low cost options for credits - like onlinedegree (https://www.onlinedegree.com/free-courses/), and some of the Saylor courses that are not ACE approved (only NCCRS - breakdown here https://www.saylor.org/credit/).  It also allows a more work at your own pace schedule. Once enrolled at WGU it is a very dedicated to the school work timeline in order to complete it in one term.  The Big3 may cost a bit more, but they are far more life gets in the way friendly.

Also I know that you are price sensitive but keep in mind that lowest cost may not be the best option for your wife - meaning she may come to highly dislike one provider and love another - could even vary by subject.  As quigongene pointed out Saylor is cheap, but some of the course/exams are horrible - if she dislikes that platform and doesn't do well with the exam that cost is wasted vs paying a bit more for another provider that works better for her, and the frustration could cause her to give up or become bitter about the process. I'm not saying don't try Saylor - just don't assume it will work for all their available options. The same goes for CLEP - some subjects will be easy enough to test out of, others will need more course structure (like Study.com or Sophia offers for example).

Now a BALS could still be an option if the point is just to get a degree to check the box and she has no interest in business subject - as it has the most varied options of subject matter; it would still be a huge accomplishment for her to be proud of.  There are other options besides just business (BSBA) or general degree (BALS) options.  Who knows maybe she'd be even more interested in a TESU BA in Psychology (https://www.tesu.edu/heavin/ba/psychology - now alt credit friendly) - maybe she'd like to know why her coworkers, or kids, or even her husband do and say what they do! Hi Allvia,

Good point about doing what works best for the individual!  I want to set up my wife for success in how she learns best.  We are not limiting her Bachelor's to just Business at WGU and I will check out the other Big 3 schools.  We are also looking at Liberal Studies BA's. Honestly, the degree is not as important as checking a box as she is not being denied a promotion if she doesn't get it.  I figured the BA/BS in Business is probably the most useful or recognizable to another potential employer.

Qiugongene,

I wasn't sure how to cover my wife's name on a PDF document so that is why I just listed it.  How do I access our journey thread to get the spreadsheet?

For the courses that cannot be completed this plan via CLEP, do you recommend Saylor.com or Study.com?  I have heard that Saylor courses may be difficult to get through and I was wondering how they compare with Study.com?  The Saylor courses are free, but, would cost $25 for the Proctor exam and then transfer all of them to WGU after applying? It looks like the cost for Saylor is vastly cheaper at free course + $25 Proctor fee vs. $100 cost for 1 course ($200 mo membership with Study.com and customer is entitled to take 2 courses per month)?   Can you "jump ahead" in Saylor courses if you are familiar with the material and how hard are they complete in a timely manner?  A little higher cost for the class might be justified for an easier way to get credit for the courses.

Can anyone recommend sources for the following credits as opposed to just taking the credit at WGU (i.e. CLEP/DSST)?

Critical Thinking and Logic
Marketing Applications

Also, I am attaching a sample degree  on the attached degree plan spreadsheet.  See the WGU BSBA worksheet.  Also, can you all please confirm the tuition cost? The initial tuition is $3370 per semester and I would want her to finish successfully so I am adding about $500-600 for Study.com, etc. costs.

Saylor courses are really just a single exam, but they provide prep for them. So you absolutely can skip any/all of the material if you already feel comfortable with it.
