Calling all TESC students!!!
Posted by: bmills072200 - 07-16-2008, 07:58 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (8)

Okay,

I am quickly becoming known around my office as the “Testing Man.” There is a lady in my office that is showing interest in getting her degree and I am trying to present the testing option as best I can. I would like to refer her to TESC because she does not have any prior credits to transfer in and I think FEMA credits will help her get started. I need some help from you TESC folks because I do not know a lot about the programs there. She wants to get a BSBA. I have referred her to the TESC website, but I would like to give her more concrete information about what can and cannot be tested out of. I know that several of you on this forum are going for the BSBA from TESC.

Can you guys send me any spreadsheet breakdowns that you may have for degree requirements or give me the links to reference the information? How many FEMA credits can be earned for the BSBA? What classes cannot be tested out of or require taking a TESC exam?

Thanks in advance!

Ben

  GRE Subject Tests- Study Difficulty
Posted by: zeroglory - 07-16-2008, 07:18 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

For anyone who has studied for any of the GRE Subject tests, how long did you study and how difficult was the test compared to a CLEP?

I know it varies depending on the person, experience, which subject taken, etc, just trying to get a general idea of the timeframe and study methods you used.

I too need a little direction. I'm still awaiting my evaluation results from EC. I heard I can take some tests now before I enroll. I'm entering the CJ program there. Below I listed the courses that are required. Is this all of them? What about the Gen Ed courses? How do I know which gen eds to take? How do I know which ones to "bang out?"

Also, are Gen Eds, Gen Eds? If I decide to go Liberal Studies instead?

What was your most difficult CLEP exam?
Posted by: mrburk - 07-15-2008, 08:16 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (16)

So far I would say Western Civ I or Humanities. Its hard to pick because they were so different. Western Civ was probably a harder test but more fun to study. Humanities was an easier test but it was going over tons of boring facts and trying to memorize names.

The skinny for those who live in Minnesota...
Posted by: lrgaul - 07-15-2008, 08:04 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I have noticed that we have several of my fellow MN residents on this forum, which is great! This may apply similarly to other states as well, but I am not sure on that so you may have to dig into it a little bit. Hopefully this is a trend that will spread like wild fire.

You may know that the state of Minnesota has raised money for high school students to take CLEP exams, and begin earning college credit, completely free of charge. Essentially, the state of Minnesota will pay for up to six CLEP exams for high schoolers who have been MN residents for at least one year. This is a pretty sweetheart deal, huh?

Since I already know that many people on this forum feel the same way as I do about how some colleges like to "snub" CLEP credit, I feel pretty comfy sharing this information with all of you. I was looking around on the U of M website trying to get info about the CLEPs they will accept for credit. Not so much because I really want to attend the U of M, but just because I was curious about it. BTW: The U of M is a university that receives extremely high rankings. In fact, the top twenty overall is not terribly unusual to see. Anyway, I was somewhat surprised to find that they only accept FOUR different CLEP exams for college credit! Doesn't it seem odd that the state of MN will pay for six CLEP exams for high schoolers, yet its largest university will only accept four of them?

But there is a simple loophole here that you don't necessarily see at first glance...

The state of MN also created the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MNTC). The MNTC indicates that an AA in Liberal Arts earned at one of the MN public institutions will be accepted as meeting general education requirements at every single one of the 22 MN State Colleges and Universities!

If you take a look at the community college websites within the MN State Colleges and Universities system, you will find that CLEP acceptance is very liberal. Usually every single one of the CLEP exams are accepted for college credit with a passing score (usually 50 or higher). Residency requirements are usually pretty simple too - in most cases, you can earn an AA in Liberal Arts by completing only 20 of the last 28 credits with that institution.

As a result, it would be easy for a high schooler (or an adult for that matter) to complete 44 credits in CLEP exams, transfer those credits into Normandale Community College (or similar), finish his or her last 20 credits at that community college, and earn an AA in Liberal Arts. Once that 64 credit associates degree is earned, which could easily be done over Summer and Fall semester, he or she could transfer to the U of M and earn a very prestigious degree while CLEPping out of 1.5 years of college. Better yet, if that person had not CLEPped out of any of the four exams that the U of M does formally accept, than he or she could also take those four exams.

All in all, it is possible to CLEP out of up to 56 credits, and still earn a degree from the University of Minnesota. I wanted to send this out as somewhat of a "public service announcement". I hope this information proves to be helpful for someone here. Smile

  Any Realtors out there?
Posted by: Lindagerr - 07-15-2008, 07:29 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (4)

I NEED to get away! My husband has conceeded the point. Between my mother, my sons, my job and school I am going nuts! So I am looking for a place to get away alone to rethink the rest of my life.

I would like to find a furnished apartment/condo/home within a four hour drive of central NJ. I want to stay just for the month of August. How do I find this?? If I look for vacation rentals I seem to find either 1 week or all summer. I cannot afford to pay $1000 a week for 4 weeks. If I push it I could maybe go $1000 for the whole month.

Anyone who has any idea how I can find a quiet, safe, natural setting, but not to far from civilization. I would love any suggestions.

  EC clep credits
Posted by: dc67 - 07-15-2008, 04:12 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (2)

I am finally on the verge of applying to EC. My question is about transferring in clep and dsst test I have already taken. Will they except them off of my transcript from my current school or do I have to have them sent in from clep and dsst(whoever that would be)? If they will except it off of my current schools transcript, will they except an updated transcript later? Will it cost extra? Reason being, my transcript will not be up to date until the end of the current semester. They only update them once a semester. If I take a test before I actually enroll at EC, can I still have the grade sent to them? Otherwise, my current school will not be updating again until December and if I transfer, I hope to be finished or atleast close by then.
I know that is a lot of questions, it really is knd of one big one though.

Thanks,

Doug

Just took 2 new dSSt exam - Drug and Alcohol & Heres 2 your healthl
Posted by: wandasoff - 07-15-2008, 02:42 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

I just took the new Drug and Alcohol exam and with great sadness I did not do well. I used IC only and only three questions were on the exam from IC.

The test consisted of 101 questions and unless you are a pharmacists or know all sorts of drugs it is difficult to pass this exam. To help others, we need to get a book that contains the certain legal and illegal drugs in it.

Also, there were alot of psychoanalytic theories, and not much on crack, cocaine or the type of drugs we all know of. The drugs were more in line with mental health drugs, inhalants, and all sorts of pharmeceutical drugs.

Heres to your health - Don't underestimate this one either - 100 questions!

This exam is a cross between drug and alcohol and pychology. You need to know about the drugs used for mental health, dental and overall wellness. Several questions on different types of exercises and resistance training. Not a slam dunk exam either you either know it or you don't. Now, criminal justice, you can use common sense and figure out the answer.

I think the folks who re-wrote these exams wanted to raise the bar and they are much more difficult to pass without alot of study. I think I am marginal on heres to your health and completely failed drug and alcohol as I had no idea what certain drugs used in mental health do and the what the long and short term effects are.
