RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - infradata.it@gmail.com - 05-26-2025 I finished (Pun?) "Uncover Finnish Education" .. if you grind, and dont watch videos at 1.0x speed > 1.5 to 3 hours to finish it (I would guess for most) This assumes aiming for "100 word" replies (vs 300). I dictated it (I speak at Ben Shapiro speed levels...) Peer grading is "light handed/permissive" / It was very well made RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - Epiphany.y - 05-27-2025 @ infradata.it@gmail.com Thank you very much for the valuable information. I have completed the "Uncover Finnish Education" course, and it was a great experience. However, I have a question. Do we need to register for a student account at the University of Helsinki and transfer the credits from the MOOC courses to the University of Helsinki? RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - animuscerebri - 05-27-2025 (05-27-2025, 04:37 AM)Epiphany.y Wrote: @ infradata.it@gmail.com Hi @Epiphany.y I'm preparing a type of boiled down study guide / mini-Wiki how to go about the Finnish unis, which classes to take, and how to get RA creds evaluated and transferred to TESU. However, yes, you gotta register your succesful completion with Helsinki. They almost always explain in syllabus section / the course description how to do it or you can also find it on their official websites. Generally-speaking, when you're done with a course, you get a link inside the course to sign up with the University to get the grades recorded in their credits registry. In order to do that, you fill out a form with your personal details and click submit. After a couple of weeks, they register your grade + credits there. Then, you can also request a digitally-verified transcript of records, but bear in mind that this is useless for foreign creds evaluators. The University has to send them directly to the respective foreign cred evaluator. I recommend either ACEI or WES. WES grants more credits, but is pretty slow, and ACEI has a tendency to grant a little less, but it is way faster. RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - Epiphany.y - 05-27-2025 @animuscerebri Thank you very much for the information, which has cleared up my doubts about how to transfer these MOOC credits. RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - Epiphany.y - 05-27-2025 “Registration for a course Open university fee 75 euros Verkko-opetus, Sustainable Stewardship of Nature and Indigenous Ecological Knowledge, Verkko-opetus (5 op) ................................” I've just completed a course, and at the end of it, a link popped up for enrolling to get Open University credits, which costs 75 euros. Does every course cost this much? RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - infradata.it@gmail.com - 05-27-2025 Yes some have Minor fee, I made a drilldown with the "100% free, current in english": https://www.helsinki.fi/en/admissions-and-education/search-programmes-and-courses?s_application_period_active=y&s_format=mooc,distance_or_online_teaching&s_itg=open_university&s_its=%2A&s_p=1&s_q=&s_s=az&s_tag=free_for_everyone&s_teaching_language=en&s_y=88 I added as doc, these should be 100% free all around ("Free for all" tagged) According to our EU guide, these will "cycle with term" between English/Finish instruction, and some are only offered Spring or Fall (etc) and we must wait for them, or do uni in finish.... A ton are expiring this August. RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - Tomas - 05-27-2025 They have been around for a few years, it is very likely they will be available in the next semestr or school year after August expiry of current offering. RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - pregrad000 - 05-27-2025 Hmm does anyone know if you complete enough of these if you can obtain a transcript from them with course grades and GPA? Or would this be mainly pass/fail credit/no-credit. I wanted to see also if you do the max if you could transfer the courses into a degree program at Helsinki. RE: University of Helsinki: Free Courses, “IN ENGLISH” + FREE + SELF-PACED + For Credit - animuscerebri - 05-27-2025 (05-27-2025, 11:28 AM)pregrad000 Wrote: Hmm does anyone know if you complete enough of these if you can obtain a transcript from them with course grades and GPA? It depends on the courses you take. Each course mentions in its syllabus if it its grading is just PASS or GRADES 1-5. It is pretty much balanced in terms of how many courses offer a "passing" grade or a real grade. Introduction to Programming, Advanced Programming and both Data Structures and Algorithms I + II courses provide grades, which is really cool. Those RA creds really look good when you apply for a grad school, because you can show them real grades with real course work (projects and code). You only need 1 passed or graded course, and then you can request a transcript. You don't have to wait for each individual course. However, if you wanna transfer them to a US school, then you should wait till you finish all courses, wait till the appear on a transcript completely, and then send that transcript to a foreign cred evaluator (fyi: I just coin now this abbreviation: FCE). Remember that foreign cred evaluator charges for every little change on a transcript quite substantially. Initial transcript costs around $250, additional courses maybe a 100$ (doesnt matter if its 1 course or 100). What counts is how many times you updated your transcript and sent it to this FCE. Courses with grades (Finnish grading: 1-5, 5 ist best, 0 is fail (F)). Pass is H. University of Helsinki adds your grades and does a GPA. The ones that are passed are simply mentioned as H. In some cases and depending on the degree program, you could transfer it to a Helsinki program, but they have closed many options over the past few years. They also mention that on their website. I would also have to do some research how this would actually work at the University of Helsinki. I'm not so sure about that. They did have some significant changes in the past 6 months, such as charging for a lot more classes than before, adding new registration system in parallel to the current one, and many more details. If I were you, I'd take as much as I can this cycle. Maybe they charge for currently free classes in the next cycle, nobody knows. What I do know is that they have been constantly implementing changes more notably for more than 6 months. |
