I have a pet peeve for people calling the social sciences humanities. It started with the people on the City Data forum. I'd also love if the brought out a "Jazz & Blues History" TECEP, but it's highly unlikely. If you go through TESC's PLA-100 & PLA-200 course, then submit a portfolio for 12 credits, it would basically cost you $59.20/credit because you'll also get 3 credits (lower level) for the PLA courses. However, if you only need upper-level credits & go that route then you really are paying $74/credit versus $37/credit for a TECEP. The alternative is to go through either Kaplan's PLA course online, which is free & will give you transferable ACE credits, but its not specific to TESC. Or use the free Saylor PLA course work, which is more specific to the TESC PLA process, but I believe will not give you the lower level ACE credits for the PLA course itself. I believe if you go through Saylor you need to sign-up for the ePortfolio so you can send your Saylor transcript to TESC proving you took a PLA course. If you go one of these two alternative routes & apply for 12 credits the cost would be $30.25/credit versus $37/credit for TECEPs. So it would be slightly cheaper, but involves writing a lot (Sanantone has previously mentioned about 5 pages per credit attempted). Its also not as guaranteed as the TECEPS, so PLAs are probably best used by someone who has a lot of advanced experience in a some-what uncommon topic. Just to clarify, if I were to take the Kaplan or Saylor PLA and submit the transcript to TESC as prove, then the cost of 12 TESC PLA credits would be $30.25/credit? |
