Has Anyone Tried Modern States? - Homeschoolmom6 - 06-14-2017

I'm a couple of months late to this party. Daughter just signed up and got an account on Modern States. Even if we don't get a voucher for the CLEP expenses, this is completely free instruction. My daughter has tried a couple of websites and study books, but so far, likes REA books & their on-line practice the best. She plans to use Modern States for subjects that she's not had any instruction to learn the material and supplement with REA books and their on-line practice practice exams. Modern States is quite literally the Freshman year for free.

My daughter passed 1 CLEP with exactly a 50. She failed a different one with a 45. I hate to use the term 'failed' because it was a difficult subject for her; She's studying and going to try it again in August.
CLEP exams, and timed standardized exams, are not easy for everyone! Congratulations on the 2 CLEP exams that you did pass. Good Luck!

Please let us know how your daughter does on CLEP tests after trying Modern States! And good luck to her!

Personally I wouldn't risk it unless time was really limited and someone knew they might fail.

I'm not sure if Modern States reimburses the test center fee if you fail, and I'm not sure they would give a second try voucher.

It seems you have to show your score when you apply for reimbursement.

I used them for MacroEcon CLEP but I did not try for a waiver from them. The content was ok but I felt I would not have passed using it by itself. Other courses may be better but I felt the Macro course gave skim level knowledge. It may be a good overall prep and than deep dive else where.

I definitely wouldn't use them as your sole resource for CLEP prep. They do recommend that you use the included PDF textbook and not just the videos, though.

I used it for Macro Econ I needed for a master's prereq. I think it was ok. I felt I needed resources which I sought out to help me pass. What I did like about the format is it is specifically tailored for the CLEP. I think it is a good base and with minimal supplementation, it is a great option. The fact they will pick up the tab is great.

That's the main reason I use them XD

But they are helpful to get a different perspective from say a textbook/REA cram guide.

Didn't read the whole thread, you can see my writings elsewhere. I'll follow up more when I have time.

I personally would NOT exclusively 'trust' modern States education as being enough for the CLEP - I took Principles of Marketing and Principles of Management, i'm sure I would have failed Marketing and think Management would have barely passed or been around 50 had I relied on that ALONE. However I found them an excellent companion to the free clep prep guide/audio - those two together gave me A-equivalent material. I wouldn't have done FCP alone, it was the combination with Modern States that worked really well. I didn't touch any other resource besides those two and aced both! So i'm happy.

I hope to try this again with my next two, probably Sociology and English Comp - to exclusively use Modern States and FCP for my study guides, and to see how it goes. FCP seems to really have the cram'n'slam facts down but doesn't show the big picture - MS gives a nice big picture to assemble it all together in your head.

I've used Modern States to study for two tests now, both of which they paid for with vouchers after I completed the practice questions. I passed both the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature and Humanities CLEPS using only Modern States resources and studying off and on for about a week each. I realize that everyone tests differently but they've been great for me. Smile
