What Would You Do??? - Basket Weaver - 01-12-2007
I am torn on what I should do.... I have one cass left to finish out my BS in Liberal Studies via Excelsior. I was planning on taking Social Psych but it would be self study (no great IC Study Guide
) and recent people have cleared a "C". I am teetering on honors and want an upper level I can get a good score on. I have yet to take either Civil War or Soviet Union history tests for the simple fact I have zero interest in either of them, to study them is pure misery. Anyone out there have any advice? I know I previously posted I don't care about the honors, but after all this work, why not go for it? Your help, as always, is appreciated. Thanks, Lee

My advice to you is go for Civil War and Reconstruction! It is really not that boring and a lot of resources are available for you do do well on the exam on these boards. I am sure you would ace this exam. Send me a PM if you want any further information and good luck in whatever you choose!

Civil War and Reconstruction is your best bet Lee. It is straightforward history and from what I have observed so far, most folks have scored in the A and B brackets. Good Luck!

I havent taken either Civil War or Social Psych and I know the wisdom on here says go with Civil War. I would gather by looking at your signature that your concentration is in Psychology. As with any decision, the final decision is up to you, But let me ask this, how much effort would you have to put in, in order to get an "A" in a subject "Civil War" that you have "absolutely no interest in" Now, what if you took that same level of effort and put it into Social Psychology. Something that apparently your interested in and I would guess at least the underlaying foundation in. Just something to think about.

The Ken Burns series made the Civil War very interesting for me when I took the course at my local university last year. As a secondary source, it helped me keep the timeline of events and major players straight in my head because I had visual images of them.

I really wanted to take the time to watch the Burns series before the examination. I even bought the DVD set! I was just too busy with work, home, two EC courses, anothe DANTEs, and some "live" courses at a local college.
Basically, I looked at Instantcert, read "Civil War For Dummies", looked at the threads in regards to the exam on this forum as well as the Sparknotes. I got a 66 on the exam.

Hi Lee,
I took Civil War in December and i was totally not interested in the subject matter...but when i started studying seriously and watched the ken burns tapes i enjoyed studying for it thoroughly and in fact want to read more about it after i am done with my degree.
The topic is actually interesting and the Instantcert and Ken burns tapes are enough for an A. I got 59 with a full one week of serious studying.
If I can do it so can you.I would suggest you try and start studying for Civil War for a day or two and then decide.

All,
Thanks to all that have replied thus far. My thinking seems to be in line with all that you have written. The pro's for Civil War are that I already have the Civil War for Dummies book, I can get the Ken Burns videos from the base library for free, and then I always have the IC cards as well. The Cons are that.... I could give a flying.....about the civil war. Allow me to sum it up--Slaves, divison of country, fight, south lost, people still whining about it to this day; did I miss anything? It's sort of like watching the movie "Titanic", pointless as I knew the ending already.
Then there's always the waiting for 2 months (yes, it can take that long for military overseas to get an answer) for Dantes to get me the score, the ECE I would have the answer on in 9 days. Pros to Social Psych-- Interesting and I've already done 4 U/L Psych classes. The reason I chose Psych as a second area of focus is because that's the U/L cards that IC, either had made up, or was in the process of creating. I have learned to appreciate this field of study and have become interested in the material. It does have practical application as I better understand how to handle some of the whacko's (new Psych Term
) I have to deal with from time to time. CONS: Besides the text book, there are very few study resources, but I did find a few practice online quizzes. In the sence of testing out of, it is reletively unproven ground. Steve, any chance on a study guide for this subject? From what I've seen, it seems very doable.......Anyways, thanks for the feedback received thus far, and for any others who wish to add their knowledge/experience in this matter. Regards, Lee
