Excelsior or TESC for biology major - amirah85 - 09-17-2010

hi everyone i am new here to the forum.I am currently trying to put together a degree plan for a BA or BS in biology. i will not be testing out of anything and will be taking all of my science courses with labs.

the thing is i am not sure on which college i should get my actual degree from. I am a stay at home mom. i have 2 yrs of university just need to finish it up since i put it on hold once i had my son. i may consider graduate school in the future. does anyone have any experience with either program that can give me any insight? or any information at all i would appreciate it

The TESC program's requirements for the biology major are tougher to complete than Excelsior's because you'd have to take two organic chemistry and two physics courses in addition to biology courses, but there is considerably more flexibility in the electives you'd have to take as opposed to Excelsior's program.

Excelsior also has an Info Literacy 1 credit hour requirement and a capstone course requirement that has to be taken with them.

If you are planning to go to grad school for biology or biochem, I'd definitely go with TESC because you will need those org chem and physics courses.

Unless you are planning on taking them at your local community college, I'd recommend taking Intro Bio, Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology with either Clovis CC or NMJC (I took class with the latter and can strongly recommend it).

Another possible option for you would be TESC's BA in Natural Sciences and Mathematics, a program I intend to enroll in.

actually i was thinking of Biochem as a possibility for grad. school so thats good to know. i live in canada (but im american) so some of the lab classes i will take here. since i can use my fin. aid here and you can write them off on taxes. i have all of my credits completed B&M for the BA in biology from TESC except for the science courses. i been checking the threads for science classes with labs and i have the ones you mentioned on my list (i think you actually posted a link for them in another thread i read) thanks a bunch!!

Welcome to the forum!

Hopefully you have found this information already -

Our very own Sunshine has recently completed her BS in Biology at Excelsior College. She posted her degree plan here:

http://www.degreeforum.net/general-education-testing-discussion/10605-anyone-have-biology-degree-plan.html#post77974

Note: A capstone course requirement has been added to this major recently.

She also used courses for most of the major. She is taking graduate courses now.

Be sure to check the prerequisites/requirements for any graduate programs that interest you.

I'm looking forward to following your progress!

Excelsior's requirements for the biology major definitely won't prepare you for a grad program in biochem. Check the entrance requirements of the grad programs you are interested in applying to, and I think you might decide that you are best served by enrolling in the BA in Natural Science and Mathematics because you can put a variety of courses in that major.
