Change to TESC history major requirements - misskk - 09-18-2010 I just discovered TESC changed the requirements for the history concentration. (I'm referring to this requirement: "Courses transferred to Thomas Edison State College are equated to the following levels: 100, 200, 300 or 400. A maximum of two college-level courses equating to the 100 level can be applied toward the area of study. A minimum of 18 credits equating to 300 or 400 are required.") Since I was hoping to fill at least 18 credits with 100-level cleps, I have to rework this part of the plan. Two questions: 1. Does anyone have suggestions for how to meet this requirement without actually taking classes for all the credits? So far I only see my way clear to testing out of at most 18 out of 33 credits. 2. TESC requires American History I & II and Western Civ. I & II. According to the catalog, all four of these courses are 100 level courses. According to the new rule, only two of these courses will be allowed to count towards their major. So how the dickens do their own enrolled students using TESC classes meet this requirement? Thanks in advance you guys. Change to TESC history major requirements - Yenisei - 09-19-2010 Maybe they weren't thinking about that when they made this change. Probably some other sort of European or US history courses at 200 level or above would do the trick, or maybe they will waive the requirement in this case. You can test out of almost everything using CLEP, DSST and some of Ohio University's Course Credit by Exam courses. Note that under this scenario even if you are able to get 6 credits in European History for the two Western Civ courses, you would still need another course to meet the 18 credit UL requirement. CLEP US History 6 credits L DSST Vietnam War 3 U Soviet Union 3 U Modern Middle East 3 U Europe since 1945 3 L Civil War 3 L Ohio U Ancient Egypt 2.67 U Ancient Greece 2.67 U Ancient Rome 2.67 U Take a look at LSU for the remaining credits you need. Change to TESC history major requirements - Yenisei - 09-19-2010 Something just occurred to me- perhaps the American Dream ECE can be used instead of the US History CLEPs, which would then enable the OP to use the Western Civ CLEPs. OP- check and see how that ECE transfers to TESC- if it transfers at the 300 level, you are in the clear with both the US History and the 18 upper level credit requirements. Change to TESC history major requirements - misskk - 09-19-2010 Thanks for the help! I'm working on your suggestions. In the meantime, another question. If I take the ECE American Dream course, will I still be able to use the American History I Clep somewhere else? Or would this be considered double dipping? The American History and Western Civ are not part of the "area of study" they are in addition to it- so they won't count as your 100 levels. One thing about TESC, they do NOT offer all the classes you need for most of the degrees- you will have to do the credit elsewhere and transfer it back. Change to TESC history major requirements - Yenisei - 09-20-2010 Cook, I don't think that's accurate: Thomas Edison State College | BA in History Credit Distribution. I guess someone could stash the 2 Western Civ CLEPs under the Social Sciences Gen Ed requirement, but they would still have to come up with 6 World History credits or 6 other credits in Western Civ (maybe 200 level or above courses in European history could be substituted). Change to TESC history major requirements - kevinmanemane - 09-20-2010 I'm not an expert, but I think ECE's American Dream is a Humanities filler, not History. I think it does transfer to the 300+ level, but you might wanna be reassured that it can fulfill the History field. Does TESC consider these LL? Change to TESC history major requirements - Yenisei - 09-20-2010 Yes, the Civil War is unfortunately LL. Too bad about the ECE American Dream not being history credits. I'd recommend going with LSU because of price and quality for remaining credits even though they are not a testing option. |
