Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - ozzylab - 02-13-2011 I need 15 hours to complete BS Liberal Studies at Excelsior. Within that I still need a math class and a second depth which needs to be nine hours of upper level. Advisor suggest college math CLEP (scary) and find three UL courses/tests in Sociology, Psychology or political science (all three must be in same area). Please offer suggestions!!! Due to a job requirement I need to complete degree within next month if possible or lose out. Any guidance on exams that fit these requirements and are passable without weeks of study would be appreciated!! Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - burbuja0512 - 02-13-2011 The college math CLEP isn't horrible. I took college algebra as a freshman in high school (lol in 1989) and then one semester of geometry. Yes, my high school did not require a lot of math to graduate. I had done NO math since then and signed up for ALEKS. After just a little brushing up in ALEKS and then going through IC cards for College Math, I passed the CLEP. I also used youtube lectures to help with a few concepts here and there. You may not even need ALEKS if you can go through just the IC cards and make sense of them. I didn't know everything that was in them, so when I'd see something I didn't know, that's when I'd google it or look on youtube. If you are good at self-teaching, you could probably have this one down with a week of study. You'll probably get more suggestions on other tests if you list what you already have. It's hard to make recommendations without knowing what you've already done. HTH!
Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - ozzylab - 02-13-2011 Thanks for reply. The only exam I have taken to this point is the CLEP Humanities. Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - ryoder - 02-14-2011 Does excelsior grant ace credit for aleks, if so then you can do intermediate and college algebra on aleks for six credits. If you can suffer through statistics you might get another six through intro and business statistics. Search the forum for aleks. For more info. It's only like twenty bucks a month so I would sign up right away just for the learning part of it alone. Now I am not sure how EC places these tests but how about looking at Substance Abuse, Fundamentals of Counseling and Org Behavior. These should all fall under Psychology and hopefully they are all upper level. Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - P00057870 - 02-14-2011 I was where you are now just a few months ago. Listen to your counselor. If you wish to test out, the ECE tests in Psychology and Social Psychology are your best bet. Check out the forums as there are suggestions on how to take these so they are most beneficial. I did not want to do the Research test, but selected ECE Abnormal Psychology, Psych of Adulthood and Aging, Foundations of Gerentology, and am now studying for Social Psychology. If you check the forums you will see where those who have gone before suggest the sequence to do these so that you can benefit most from any overlap. I needed more UL credits, so have already done DSST Civil War and Reconstruction, but after completing Social Psychology will still need one more - so I will do the Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union. Hope this may give you some ideas to help you make the best selection for your needs. Judy Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - burbuja0512 - 02-14-2011 Check out the DSST difficulty lists at Free Clep Prep.com Difficulty IMHO is based more on what interests you. For example, I liked substance abuse a lot more than here's to your health, even though they both rate a "3" for difficulty. However, it's a good starting point to view what general perceptions about the tests are and it also lists whether ACE recommends the tests as LL or UL. You will need to double check with EC before taking the test though. COSC is a little stricter and many of the UL tests, I actually get LL credit for. Then, once you've picked a few UL tests that interest you, check to see which subject they would fall into. If you can't meet your requirements through DSST alone, you might want to review the ECE and TECEP options, though as a non-TESC student, the TECEP will cost you a small fortune. I think like 700+ dollars when I looked into it. Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - NAP - 02-14-2011 You are in a tough spot, but I have seen a depth in psychology with 9 UL credits before. http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-thomas-edison-charter-oak-specific/10544-depths-excelsior-2.html#post77474 Notice that Peace123 was allowed to use ALEKS Stats for UL credit toward a Psychology depth. Check out the Student Guide to Credit by Exam. I don't see any DANTES exams that EC counts as UL in psychology. There are several UL ECEs in psychology, though. As mentioned, there are 2 DANTES exams that are considered UL in history. Maybe you could add an ECE, like World Conflicts. Yes, work closely with your advisor to make sure you are taking the best test combination. Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - NAP - 02-14-2011 Another thought - You'll need to see how easy it is to study for and schedule ECEs in your area. You may be better off time-wise to take some extra LL credits, so you can stick with CLEP/DSST exams. For instance 6 LL CLEP/DSST in history plus 6 UL DSST in history. Then choose 3 UL DSST in something else (or ALEKS Stats). 4 DANTES UL exams in Arts & Sciences – Civil War - history Soviet Union - history Money & Banking Business Ethics & Society 4 DANTES UL exams in Applied Professional – if you haven't already hit the 9 UL credit max in AP Management Information Systems Principles of Finance Substance Abuse Business Law II Need 15 credits to complete Excelsior B.S.L.S. - marianne202 - 02-14-2011 I did my BSLS with EC with a depth in psychology. I used the EC psych exams. You can see in my signature which exams I took. EC will award credit for ALEKS if you want to go that route instead the CLEP exam. I don't have my transcript, but I know substance abuse was UL, but is usually awarded as elective or professional credit. I believe fundamentals of counseling and org behavior are LL at EC. I think the only UL credit for psych are with the EC exams. If you lump these exams together and use the EC practice exams coupled with the material here you can pass these without too much trouble. It is exciting to be so close to the end, but it can also be frustrating trying to figure out your plan of attack. Good luck! |
