Questions relating to capstone in Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies (Excelsior) - lost-in-translation - 02-25-2011

First question:

I am in the Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies program with no major. I haven't yet enrolled or received an evaluation of my credits. However, I am considering getting into the social science capstone that is offered starting March 7. I haven't completed information literacy or the 12 upper level credits of social science needed and won't be able to, before then. However, I have started to register for ECE's upper level social science exams and study for them. I have also registered for the next available information literacy class.

My question is, if I register for the capstone now, without meeting pre-requisites and as a non-enrolled student, would I be allowed to use this capstone later? Would the people at Excelsior in charge, go over my record and see that I did not complete the pre-requisites prior to registering for the capstone and then say I cannot use it? This is assuming of course that I do ultimately complete all the pre-requisites, just not before signing up for and starting the capstone course.

Second question:
Are math credits covered under the Natural Sciences capstone? If I have a completed depth in Mathematics, what capstone can I take if my other depth is completed in applied professional credits? (This is assuming I am in the Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies with no major). Also, I do not have 12 upper level credits in any science area besides Math.

Third question:
How often are the capstones offered? If I do not take the capstone that runs from March 7 to June 16, when will the next be offered?

Fourth Question:
The requirements for the social science capstone say I need 12 upper level credits in social science completed. Do these 12 upper level credits need to form a depth, or can be in diverse and relatively unrelated areas of social science (like some psychology, some sociology, some economics, etc)?

Fifth Question:
How does one go around registering for a capstone as an enrolled student? Does the advisor and college often allow one to register for the capstone even if they don't meet the pre-requisites?

You won't be able to register for the Capstone until you register, and are at the end of your program of study. I believe you have to be within 6 or 9 credits. I got a waiver to register for my capstone with 12 credits to go, because they kept delaying my classes, so I had to take my last class along with my capstone. But I had to get approval. The capstone is based on the previous course work and you will need to use the textbooks from the previous coursework. At least this is how it was for me in the BSHS I just completed in November.

Again, Marianne is correct. I wasn't able to register for the January Capstone because I wasn't within 15 credits of graduation, even though all major requirements had been completed. Even asked nicely Smile
