Help me stop my cousin from getting a worthless degree! - UGAChemDawg - 05-07-2011

My little cousin was recently given a full "scholarship" to study biochemistry at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

I call upon the good people of the Instacert Forums to help me talk some sense into her and show her that she is making the biggest mistake of her life.

For one thing, these frauds don't even offer majors! Look at it right there on their website:

LSA Concentrations - Office of the Registrar

List of CONCENTRATIONS! Concentration in Chemistry! Concentration in History! You don't actually end up with a degree in Biochemistry, you end up with a Bachelor of Science with a concentration in Biochemistry!

Which leads me to my next point about this worthless diploma mill:

These non-major concentration thingies aren't even printed on the diploma

Look at that! Bachelor of Arts! I can't tell from looking at his diploma if this dude's degree is in History or Basketweaving.

A degree from this place isn't worth the paper that it's printed on.

I told her about Excelsior and how, if she went there instead she would actually earn a Bachelor of Science *IN* Something (sure they don't have a biochemistry major, but she could MAJOR in biology and throw in a couple chem courses and it would be better than having a concentration in biochemistry). Not to mention, she'd actually get a real diploma. One that has the MAJOR (which she won't get at Michigan) spelled out in big, bold letters.

I'm just so scared for her future. She is about to throw away the best years of her life getting a piece of paper that no employer will take seriously and no graduate school will accept. And the Big House is a toilet bowl and Ohio State still owns Michigan anyway. :*(

Dude most of the people on this forum are getting a BA with a "concentration." Caling U Mich a diploma mill because they have concentrations instead of Bachelor's in Chemistry is a little ridiculous. No, actually. A lot ridiculous.

The Universtiy of Michigan is NOT a diploma mill.

Every school operates differently in their areas of study.

If your lil cousin has a "full scholarship" to the University then I say take it. Full scholarships are hard to come by. Having no debt at the end of school is priceless.

This diploma is not a worthless piece of paper that no employer or graduate school will turn theri nose down at. Getting a degree in Biochem is not easy. You make it through that you are almost guarantee work. If she is serious about Biochem getting a degree at Excelsior is not going to help her. You do not just have a degree in bio with a few chem classes throw in.

Also it really only matters what her transcript says not her diploma. There has been many a thread started her in recent times about what is listed on a diploma. You would have to ask is that the most important thing. Probably not. Surviving college is way more important.

I suggest you really do some research on colleges and concentration vs majors. There really is not a ton of difference.

A concentration is the same as a major and many universities use the term.
Many universities also don't list the specific major on the diploma.
University of Michigan is listed as #15 in list of top schools in biochemistry degrees.

Best Biochemistry Programs | Top Chemistry Schools | US News Best Graduate Schools

This could be a fabulous opportunity for her.

University of Michigan is not a diploma mill. And my cursory search into their biochemistry reputation is actually very good.

What she needs to know is the following:

What are the parameters of the scholarship and what is the % of sophomore students with scholarships? Some are so strict that it is highly unlikely any incoming freshmen will keep them. Leaving students scrambling for desperately for funds or switching schools.

I really hope this is a joke because I have to utterly disagree with you. It is fantastic that your cousin got a full scholarship to a university that is ranked 29th nationally. Although Excelsior is great for non-traditional students, it would be the biggest mistake of her life to turn down a full scholarship to a university that walks all over Excelsior in reputation (and probably even academics). Chemistry requires doing physical labs. Her concentration would require just as many chemistry/biochemistry credits as a major in biochemistry. A lot of people have graduated from Charter Oak and Thomas Edison with just concentrations and went on to graduate school. Graduate schools don't care if you have a concentration or a major, all they care about is whether you took the required prerequisites. She would be doing herself a disservice by majoring in biology instead at Excelsior because the degree would be weak on the chemistry end.

Just for your information, there are a lot of legitimate schools out there that don't list the major or concentration on the degree. The transcript will list the major or degree and it is the actual proof that you got your degree in something. Diploma mills don't have the reputation to be ranked nationally and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor will look great on her resume and application for graduate school.

This should be deleted. It's totally misleading and completely ignorant.

Guys, he's kidding. He's pointing out that "concentration" doesn't automatically imply something substandard. Substitute "Harvard" or any other top tier school that offers concentrations instead of majors and you'll get the joke. Wow.

Yeah he's definitely being sarcastic. It's a reference to the whole concentration/major issue people discuss here ad nauseum and how many diplomas don't list a major/concentration on them.

Come on people, we should be picking up on this and appreciating subtle humor
