TESC Second Degree New Credit Guidelines - bricabrac - 09-13-2011
Wanted to quickly post new guidelines mentioned in the September edition of the college magazine "Insights: Is a second degree for you?" by Todd Siben.
"When you begin earning those credits is also important.
"New credits" are defined as credits earned after official completion of a previous degree. This means that you should not begin course work toward your second degree until after the date printed on the diploma of your first degree. For instance, if I completed my course work in April, applied for graduation and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in June, I would need to wait until July 1 to begin course work toward my next degree."
So I gather it is no longer beyond the date the most recent degree was completed as stated in the catalog; it's the month after conferral. Overall, the article was pretty good. Guess more than a few TESC students are picking up a second associates and or bachelors degree to warrant an official write up! Good stuff.

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone with two degrees ever got this rule waived. I'm looking to apply to a one-year (British) Master's degree that if all went well I'd complete next Fall. However, if I went for a second Bachelors in the downtime but had to wait for a June graduation date, it would look like it only took me 4 months to get an MSc. I could answer the questions that would raise, but would rather avoid raising the eyebrow of mistrust in the first place.

A one year master's degree from a UK school, which probably includes a dissertation of at least 20K words, is going to keep you busy, so you won't need the distraction of going for a second bachelor's at the same time.

I do agree with you, that's why I'd like to be able to get around this rule to do the second Bachelor's before I start

I spoke with a TESC rep about this last month. The Department of Education requires 30 new credit hours to be completed after the date the first degree was awarded. 18 of these credit hours must be fulfilled in residence through TESC which the TECEP exams count for. The other 12 credits are considered electives and you can use CLEP/DSST/ECE exams to fulfill these.

That throws a bit of a wet towel on the idea, but thanks for info, you stated that a lot clearer than the tesc catalog.

That's the first time I've heard about this 18 credit residency requirement- that may apply to military students only so confirm that actually applies to your situation.

I was required to get 24 new credits after conferral and none of them required residency at TESC. This was way back in July

I am just quoting what was stated to me. I am in the military, but I wonder if I can get around that by not claiming I am. I will be doing further research. I would really like to knock out a second bachelors.

Okay, this is probably going to sound dumb, but I'm confused. Is this saying that instead of being able to start on the 24 New credits (for 2 bachelors) the day after the conferral of your first degree you now have to wait a whole month!?!? Or am I missing something? Thanks!
