English Comp I and II - CLEP advice - jtalama - 12-03-2011 First of all, this forum is a HUGE blessing; you are all extremely generous! I'm a total newbie that's decided to pursue a BALS at TESC. 95% of my credits are from B&M and I've never taken a CLEP, or similar, prior. I'd like to do my very first CLEP ever. I've seen options for English Comp with and w/out essay. I think I'll go w/essay since everyone says it's easier. But I have some really dumb questions... * Do you actually enroll at TESC if you plan on testing out of courses? * Where do you find study resources/books for CLEP tests? * How do I match up courses I need to ones that TESC will accept? * Any advice on how to go about testing for ENC-101? Code: For TESC's BA LS English Comp I and II - CLEP advice - Storyteller - 12-03-2011 jtalama, First, Clep English Composition is only with essays - TESC will accept two cleps - English Composition (6 credits) and English Comp Modular (3 credits) - definitely, do Eng. Comp. for 6 credits 2nd: Do a search on this site and you will find study guidelines for most any/all Cleps & DSSTs 3rd: If you have made up your mind to graduate from TESC, then have a credit evaluation done - It costs $75.00, shows you what credits apply toward your degree and enables you to send your Clep/DSST results to TESC. You don't need to be enrolled; the evaluation lasts about 6 months. During that time you can add to your credits. 4th: Do you actually enroll if you are testing-out? - Only if you are planning to graduate from there. 5th: InstantCert is a great study resource for most Cleps & DSSTs - also REA books, Peterson's study guides - a Search of this site will help 6th:You let TESC match up your courses with the Evaluation - see above comment. 7th: Studying for English Comp - visit free clep prep; Justin has some great advice for studying. 8th: Welcome to this forum!!!! If you want to get a degree, there is no better place than here to find the information and direction you need. Good luck & again, welcome! English Comp I and II - CLEP advice - CLEP101 - 12-03-2011 Just to add to Storyteller, I've included the TESC course equivalencies for the CLEPs and DSSTs. Hope this helps. [attachment=426] English Comp I and II - CLEP advice - BGSU_Alum_86 - 12-05-2011 If you are doing any online searching for study materials, make sure you are looking for "College" Composition (or College Composition Modular) as that is the correct name of the CLEP exam currently offered. English Composition was retired last year. Helps a ton! English Comp I and II - CLEP advice - dcan - 12-05-2011 Clarification: "Enrolling" is paying the $2,500 (or so) fee that enrolls you for one year. Getting an "Official Eval" is $75, send them all your transcripts, and its good for 6 months. You don't want to enroll until ready to graduate because it has a time limit. If you do and then you take more than a year to finish, then you are out another chunk. Getting an "Official Eval" is $75, send them all your transcripts, and its good for 6 months. Wow, I didn't know you could wait! Thank you! Btw, I paid the $75 and received my eval. I'm going to knock out an AAS quick. Why? I need a milestone and motivator for my BA LS! I only need College Comp and 3 credits of math for an AAS. The $200-something graduation fee is worth it. Plus I think I can finish my BALS within a year. I've made some drastic changes to allow for this to happen. English Comp I and II - CLEP advice - dcan - 12-07-2011 College Comp (not modular) will net you 6 credits at TESC and fill both ENG-101 and ENG-102 towards your bachelor's as well. Also, the College Mathematics CLEP will net you 6 credits of math, filling your 3 as well as giving you 3 more towards your bachelor's when the time comes. Of course you need to make sure the College Math CLEP will satisfy whatever your math requirement is for your AAS degree -- it is considered the lowest foundational math course. I had to take trig from ALEKS for my required precal credit for my BSBA degree, but the College Math CLEP fills 6 credits of gen-ed electives at least. Not bad for 90 minutes of your time. English Comp I and II - CLEP advice - jtalama - 12-07-2011 Yes, I ordered the REA CLEP book for College Comp and am staying away from Modular. I had TESC change my degree program to AAS in Applied Computer Studies and it looks like I don't need Math credits any longer. Take look below... it says "Completed" in parenthesis. I thought I needed .33 in Math?? Code: D: College Mathematics (Completed) What does the !!! Exception mean?? Also, the person who changed my degree program also said that I only need ENC-101/ENC-102. It seems to me like I don't need any more Math. |
