Production/Operations Management and Business Policy advice for Excelsior - auminer49r - 04-09-2007

Hello all of you fellow CLEPers and Dante exam takers,

If you're going for a business degree at Excelsior College, you will need credits in Production/Operations Management and Business Policy. CLEP and DSST do not offer these exams. TECEP exams seem to be the popular alternative, however, they are reputed to be difficult, expensive, and slow to provide your scores. Rumor has it they cost $400 each, and it takes a good 6 weeks or longer to receive your results. Let me tell you about a cheaper, and possibly quicker alternative that will get you your 3 credits quicker that TECEP.

CSU-Pueblo (Colo St. Univ) offers independent study courses for both of the Excelsior College courses I mentioned. You pay tuition of $297 per course then the Professor emails you a syllabus. You get 6 months to turn in the required discussion question assignments from the textbook (another $60-$80 purchase from amazon, Ebay, or half.com) and to take 4 exams. Once you have read the chapters and done the discussion questions, you email the Professor and request the next exam. He will email it to you to take at home. (closed book... of course Wink ). You can bust out the assignments and exams as quickly as possible and the prof claims to be able to grade them quickly and return them with feedback in a day or two. Plus, the Prof is available for questions by email. PLUS... They do NOT verify that you have met the prerequisite courses. Even though you would do yourself an injustice to skip over the prerequisite courses, in my opinion. You need them anyway.

I suspect you can take the course for $297 in... let's say.. 1 month or maybe 2 and get a final grade right away. That sure beats spending $400 for a scary TECEP test that you don't know how well to study for and a long, drug out, lag time waiting for the test to be graded. Besides... what if you fail it?? What a waste of time AND money.
See both course descriptions on this page...

I've done my research and I think you'd be doing something if you found a better value for Production/Operations Management and/or Business Policy at LSU (independent study) or anywhere else. LSU has a restriction on assignments per week. CSU-Pueblo does not.

I am waiting for my textbook to arive in the mail and then I will bust out P/O Mgmt in short order.

I wish I knew whether Excelsior would accept MGMT 460 - Operations Strategy instead of MGMT 485 - Management Strategy and Policy (which is actually the CSU-Pueblo capstone course) for their Business Policy requirements. I have a hunch they will based on the course name. But, I don't know. If you know... would you let me know?

Hope this info helps you as much as me.

Hi auminer49r-
I am in the midst of taking TECEP OM and BP. My husband just finished both. It took 3 weeks for him to get his first grade (pass) and he is still waiting for his second grade. I finished OM and I'm waiting on my grade to see if I passed before I post anything. I WISH the tests were $400! They are $450 EACH with a proctoring fee (ours is $25 each test). If you fail you can retake the test in 3 months. If you fail again for the second time you're done, you can't retake it. There is a lot of pressure on you with these tests especially because of the money issue and the prep time is not short. Your post will be able to help a lot of people with the alternative for these tests. Thanks for posting.

Auminer,

According to Christine Foley, who is an Academic Advisor on the "Business Team" at Excelsior College...."The course at Colorado State University MGMT 460 Operations Strategy would NOT meet the Business Policy core requirement. The course that does is MGMT 485 Management Policy and Strategy."

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! Rolleyes

Thanks for this information, Kiwi. It's always nice to be able to feed off of the research others have done. You know, Excelsior College explains in their business catalog that possible alternate titles for Business Policy might include Business Strategy, Corporate Strategy, and Management Policy/Strategy. All of which sound pretty darn similar to "MGMT 460 - Operations Strategy". However, the course descriptions are a little more different. I appreciate your research and I'll heed your advice.

Yutzi, Good luck with your TECEPs. Keep us posted on your (and your husband's) results. After 114 credits of school, these final two exams for $475 each are an insult to injury. Those costs do not seem justifiable to me. But, hey...

Christine Foley is THE Academic Advisor at Excelsior for the business program. She is excellent and always promptly responds to my sometimes fairly involved and obtuse questions.

Do you know if MGMT 485 Management Policy and Strategy. is offered at Colorado State University, since the other you suggested earlier on does not satisfy the Business Policy for Excelsior Business Degree

Any advice or alternatives will be very much appreciated

Yes it is. See the same link I posted above. It's the last course on the web page. I am going to have to take it next; in another two or three weeks.

I am very happy with the Production/Operations Management independent study course I am in now at CSU-Pueblo. I haven't had to wait for more than a few hours to see the grades of my papers, after I emailed them to the professor. I couldn't ask for faster feedback!!

Let me know if you do the Business Policy Capstone course at CSU-Pueblo. I'm going to follow in your footsteps if you do.
