Why no Analyzing & Interpreting Literature CLEP prep? - cleplady - 03-01-2012
I bought InstantCert because another website recommended it for all CLEP subjects (except Language), including the Analyzing & Interpreting Litature CLEP, which is the one I'm taking.
I may have to ask for a refund. Does anyone know what CLEP prep company really does offer it?

There is this little thing called the CLEP website which should be the first place to start for anyone taking a CLEP exam. Have you read/printed the exam description/At a Glance? This is a free source with the following headings:
Description of the Examination
Knowledge and Skills Required
Study Resources (with 11 college textbooks referenced, along with online writing guides and online literature resources)
Sample Test Questions
The CLEP website also offers Individual Exam Guides. Just look up Analyzing & Interpreting Literature and it is $10. This will give you an actual practice exam so you can get an idea of the type of questions.
Maybe others will supply some more info, but this is a start if you haven't done it already. Google is a wonderful invention, too!

There is disagreement as to whether or not preparation is necessary. There is also disagreement about the feasibility of being able to teach someone in a test prep format how to analyze literature.
Many of us passed without preparing for it. If you can read a passage of literature and get the main points from it, the test should be easy.

Prior to taking that exam, I saw others stating that its a hit or miss exam, you either know it or you don't. I can agree, if you enjoy literature, poetry etc then you should do fine as long as you brush up on literary devices. You should definitely check the clep official website and look at their sample questions as well.
I usually check Free Clep Prep.com and the official clep website (college board).

Some of the collegeboard sample sheets even have recommended college text books to study from.

I have to agree, this test was kind of the unusual type. The links beargins posted are the same ones I used. If you can understand the meaning behind writing (including "old" english) and study up on the literary terms it should be fine. It was the easiest credits I've ever taken (and it's six credits too). I've read some posts of people surprised that they failed but overall it is an easier test for most.

You can't study for this using flashcards because the test has you analyze poetry and literature. What I did was get the REA study guide at Amazon. The study guide is good, but the tests for it are awful. The test in the Official CLEP Study Guide (misnamed, it's only sample tests) is dead on in terms of what the real test is like. So REA to study and take the sample tests for some basic practice (but don't stress, they suck) and the Official sample test will give you an idea of what you really face.

Dcan is right on the money. A&I is not an exam for which studying will help. Well, not help much. Know literary terms. For that, you can study. Maybe a bit of practice to help you approach the reading would help, too. (Should you read the literary work very thoroughly, then read the questions, then go back to the work? Do you read the questions first, then read the literary work? Or there may be some other approach that would better fit your style.) Don't worry if you're not very analytical. All of that stuff sails right by me. The test, however, doesn't require you to analyze. You have to determine which analysis is correct. Let's say, for instance, that it's a poem that mentions a robin. Then, you are asked what the robin means. Don't sweat. You're offered a bunch of answers. At that point, it's easy to figure out what the robin means. Easy peasy. Good luck.
