finding out my pre-test scores? - dthom - 04-01-2012

is there a certain formula to find out what i received on the petersons practice cleps?
on the test i took, out of 80, i got 45 correct and 35 incorrect. does this equate to a 56?
is this the same way to find out the clep score also?

Well, it's a 56%, not 56 score. There isn't a sure-fire formula. Take the other 2 tests, and if you're hitting north of 50% on the others, you're likely ready to go!

The formula for calculating CLEP and DSST scores is a well kept secret. We have found that getting above 50% ( I personally prefer above 60%) on petersons practice test usually means a pass on the real thing.

Exactly. Although DSST has some info released that may be interesting to you.

The DSST refreshed exams which have a published percentage to pass on page two of this PDF:

You may also like this:

which gives a breakdown of the DSST exams and the number of test questions on each version of the form and shows the average grade that was received during their testing (which is how the scoring is determined on any CLEP exam and the DSST exams with two digit passing scores).

Hope that helps.

im sort of worried in taking the A&I Lit clep.
on all three peterson practice tests, ive gotten 56 55 55.
ive never really looked at poems and things like this, trying to interpret them.

Well I got a 54 on that when I took it. I would saw you have two things to focus on:
-Practice interpreting what is meant by the authors writing
-Practice literary terms

I used free-clep-prep.com and the official CLEP study guide for this exam.

Practice Practice Practice and you should do fine. This is one test that many people seem surprised they passed or surprised they failed, study up and give it a shot (it is six credits after all so I'd say it's worth a shot).

When you log onto your Peterson's test page, hit "scores" - one of the small tabs at the top of the page. This will give you a graph with your scores and their percentage equivalents. I feel comfortable when I'm scoring in the 70s - but I'm a worrier and I over-prepare to the max.

its hard for me to really analyse the poems and understand what the writer is trying to say.

I absolutely feel your pain! I started my CLEP journey thinking that because I loved literature I'd start with A & I - I purchased the CLEP Study Guide and REA book and was completely lost. I gave up on A & I entirely and switched to something I knew nothing about (Psychology) but it played to my strength - memorization. I then moved back to my true love (literature) and studied almost 4 months (YIKES!) for American Lit. I had great success with Am Lit and as it had A & I as part of the test I felt I might be able to attempt A & I with more confidence. I'm now working on English Lit - and am STILL battling nerves when I think about the A & I portion of that test.

If you really feel A & I isn't working for you at this point - switch to whatever subject you feel plays to your strengths. You can always come back to it later.

Good Luck!Smile
