ALEKS Pre-Calc vs Trigonometry? - LOFI - 06-23-2012

My daughter completed ALEK Int Algebra as is currently working on College Algebra. I read somewhere that TESC counts PreCalc & Trig as the same course. Is that true? If so which one do most people take if you are a non-math majors?

Thanks a million,
Hannah

It depends on your interests, really. Trig is the study of triangles, and the application of them in graphing and so on. Sin, cosine, tangent. Precalculus is a bit more general, practicing skills in preparation for Calculus, which is more about the instantaneous rate of change of things. I suppose trig is easier, but if your daughter does well on it she might wanna consider continuing to try precalculus. If you've got the interest for it, calculus can also give you a lot of credits (calculus I and II, straighter line). If not though, just stick with trig.

Oh, I also wanna reiterate my love for khanacademy.org. Before I started a topic in ALEKS, I went through the demo lectures, and got a much better understanding of the material, as well as great practice with the ALEKS system.

According to old information I saved (from another user of this site), you can do the following courses without duplication:

3 ALEKS intermediate algebra
6 CLEP college math
3 ALEKS college algebra or ALEKS algebra w/trig or CLEP algebra (choose 1)
3 ALEKS precal or ALEKS trig or CLEP precal (choose 1)
3 ALEKS stats (any one stats class) or DSST stats exam
3 CLEP calculus

If that is true then I'd say stick to precalc, it is probably better since it can lead down to calculus later on.

In my opinion, you can't do calculus without a good foundation in Trig and Precalculus. I'd recommend doing both before you tackle actual calculus, your life will be a lot easier. EVERYTHING builds in math, EVERYTHING. If you skip one course it'll be very difficult for you.
*edit: It doesn't really cost any money to take both, just some time.
