FEMA and FCC question - ah10591 - 02-07-2013
Hi, due to my stupidity I will be 3 elective credits short of a degree this semester at my university and would prefer to not have to take a summer class. I contacted my school regarding FEMA courses and whether or not they counted and they replied with:
"This course would be accepted for elective credit as long as it is reflected on Fredrick Community College's transcript as resident credit."
I am kind of confused as to what resident credit means, but it appears that I am in the clear?

If your school won't accept the FEMA credits directly then you must process them through FCC to get credit, and even then it is up to the school to accept them. You'd go through this page (Emergency Management Institute - FEMA Independent Study Program) and it will take you to FCC's site which will charge $78 per credit. If you haven't spent the time with the coursework yet I'd recommend looking into a CLEP or DSST exam, both should be around $100 with the proctor fee most charge, and that would be for 3 (or sometimes more) credits for that one price, using FCC is expensive in my opinion. Since FEMA credits aren't certified on their own, you are basically paying a middle-man to make the credits transferable. The exception is at schools like TESC where the credits can be transfered directly and without cost. Keep a close eye on deadlines too, transfering any credits usually takes weeks or sometimes months depending on the school and if you are talking about graduation this semester you'll want to monitor the transfer closely.

They are requiring you to follow the guidelines on the FEMA site and pay FCC to process the courses. I would call FCC and double check what that transcript will actually look like.....I think your gonna be ok once you complete and pay....but you need to follow up directly. Please post how this turns out, I would like to know.

Not a direct answer to your question, but I was surprised to learb that you can convert them to graded credits at FCC for $25 plus a second test on the material. http://www.frederick.edu/download/programs/StudentFAQs.pdf
As Cooper mentioned, I think a CLEP/DSST in a familiar area will be a more cost effective solution....then again if they will take them pass/fail and you can complete your degree for an extra $250 or so without any real added stress I would call that a win!
