Intro Psychology CLEP Exam HELP - jensen08 - 03-19-2013

I have been studying the REA Clep book to prepare for exam. I took the CLEP practice exam from the College Board Study guide and could not answer alot of the question and could not find the answers in the REA book. Can anyone give me advice on preparing for this test. I have been reading and studying for almost two weeks and feel I am not getting everything I need from this book. My goal is to study a little everyday and take the test by April 2.

Thank You,
Kim

I recommend purchasing the Peterson's practice exams. CLEP Practice Tests should have the one you're looking for. The $19.95 is totally worth it. Peterson's are way better than REA because they are more difficult. I scored 57, 60, and 58 on my three and then went on to score 68 on the actual test. They're a really good benchmark.

Second thing I recommend is looking over these study resources: Study Resources | CLEP. The books are usually super cheap on Amazon for an earlier edition and the websites are, I think free.

Third thing is keep studying the REA. I knew NOTHING about psych, took the Peterson's, studied the REA, used InstantCert flashcards, and passed.

I hope this helps!

Best of luck on your test!

Collegebyclep gives good advice.
Use the tests in the REA books as study practice - Take them over and over until you remember the answer. I learned everything about Psychology from taking the tests, not reading the text.
Get an Instantcert subscription - the Flashcards are great and you have access to Specific Feedback which won't give you the Q&A's, but aid in directing your studying.

A good old fashioned psych textbook will do wonders here. It should cover most everything. Go through and know all the bolded words if the book uses that format. Answer the questions at the end of each chapter. Know Maslow's Hierarchy, Erickson, Piaget, Kohlberg's steps. Know your Id, Ego and Superego. Know that Kubler-Ross talked about grief and death and dying.

This one isn't too bad. I suggeest using David Meyers Exploring Psychology. Somehow I've got about three copies of the book if you want one.

I studied the InstantCert flashcards for the Introductory to Psychology for three weeks and then took the pretest in the College Board Official Study Guide Book. It was an immediate eye opener when I did not recognize 75 to 85 percent of the subject matter or terminology posed in the Guide Book's pretest questions. I had this same experience (but not to this degree) with US history II as well. So I did the same thing I did then and I purchased the Peterson's pretests for $19.95. I scored 67, 66 & 73 respectively. Those are not good scores, but they exposed me to much more key information and terminology that pointed me in the right direction for the additional information that I definitely needed to pass the actual CLEP test. I scored a 73 on the CLEP exam and would not have passed it at all if I had not used the Peterson's in conjunction with InstantCert and the College Board Guide Book. The InstantCert slides gave me the base and an understanding of the content and subject matter for Introductory to Psychology, but did not provide me with what I needed to pass the test. All three have been vital for my success, but I could not have done it with any of them individually.
