Please help! Graduate credits - ASTRAK123 - 06-02-2013

NEED SOME HELP! Im applying to a graduate school which I can only begin in the fall and would like to get a headstart. Any online graduate education courses that I can take that will get me up to six credits and is pretty recognized?

Graduate transfer credit is treated much more restrictively than undergraduate transfer credit. Even if you can transfer up to 6 sh in graduate credit into your graduate program in education, a "pretty recognized" test isn't going to work the way it might have in undergraduate school.

Before starting any graduate course with the intention of transferring it you should best find out, and if possible get in writing, whether your prospective graduate school will accept that specific course in transfer toward your specific prospective degree program. It's not uncommon for there to be no elective space at all in a master's degree. Even if there is, it will almost always be very "restricted elective" space. Graduate courses in education run the gamut from behavior management in pre-kindergarten to workforce training for adults. There are probably hundreds of courses in education, recognized on their own, that your prospective degree program is still unlikely to take in transfer because they fall outside the mandate of that particular program. You should start by looking closely at the course requirements of your particular program.

I agree with Jonathan. Even when graduate programs accept transfer credits (normally around 6-9), they can be rather restrictive on what will transfer and what will fit into your particular program. These are the graduate credit sources I know of from this forum and a sister forum.

ACT Program
Online Continuing Education Courses for Teachers : CEUs, PLUs, Undergraduate, Graduate, Distance Learning for Educators : VESi
Earn Graduate Credit : PBS TeacherLine

This is one I found awhile back.

As a general rule, I expect graduate schools to say "show us what you have completed and we'll consider it" but they are unlikely to say "we'll give you credit for what you are thinking about taking after you complete it". They don't want to commit themselves to something that is a future event.

As a general rule, yes. Still, I could see Astrak's school at least giving a helpful unofficial sense of what they'd be likely to do – if not directly committing – especially in this particular situation. Astrak is ready to start earning credit this summer but literally can't do so at that school itself.

In some, defined situations transfer credit is regularly pre-approved: visiting students under letters of permission, consortium agreements, exchange student programs, etc.

Western New Mexico U. Has a pretty solid grad level education dept. See what they have for the summer, I think the discount for out of starters is still good, say they should be quite affordable......I would verify whatever you choose through your home institution, of course.

Your best bet is to sign up with a school like AMU/APU or WNMU this summer and take 2 courses. Another option is Amberton University. It depends upon what your master's degree will be in.
