Looking into some merit-based scholarship options for next year and am curious about what everyone here has applied for and received!
I'm attempting to create a poll, but in case it doesnt turn out here are the options:
Applied for a scholarship, did not receive.
Applied for a scholarship and was successful.
Have not applied for any scholarships.
If you want to share anything about the application process, length of time, how you heard about it, amount or any other details that would be interesting as well!

I'm not sure this will help you at all, but the 2 scholarships I got were through our local 4-H program. I applied for tons of scholarships, essay contests, etc., and didn't get anything. I would really encourage you to look for scholarships that are offered through groups or programs you are involved in. There was even a scholarship through my swim league! Of the 2 scholarships I got 1 required a short essay and they both required high school transcripts. From what I've seen, it's all about the presentation. The committee on the one scholarship said they were impressed by the entire package I submitted which was the application, my essay, and the transcript.
Anyway, as far as other scholarships, you can look at several websites. I used scholarshipexperts.com, scholarships.com, and fastweb.com. You will have to create accounts for all of them. That's how I heard about most of the ones I applied for. I think it's hard to get some of those national scholarships because so many people apply for them. I would try and look more locally. An example was I applied for the Knight Essay Contest through the Sons of the American Revolution group and I didn't receive the national award. However, I got 2nd place in the State contest. I hope that makes sense!
Be sure to watch the deadlines. They creep up really fast! lol And don't worry if it seems like it takes FOREVER for them to post the results! Most of them take a long time!

I applied and was awarded a criminal justice scholarship at a community college, but I didn't take it. I had already earned all of the credits I needed for my TESC degree and wasn't planning on enrolling another semester.

I recall spending an entire summer during high school applying for scholarships through search websites like fastweb.com. I was careful to target my efforts.
Never heard from a single one of them.

In high school I applied for and received 2 small awards that were gobbled up in 12 seconds.
Two things to remember:
1. Many people qualify for Pell Grants. This is free money that you are automatically considered for when you fill out your FAFSA and can be around $5000 per year every year until you earn a bachelor's degree. Pell can not be used for exam credit, but covers tuition and (sometimes) books. My son's $4000 pell will be paying for 100% of his community college AA and books. He will pay zero! Applying for aid does not mean you have to take out a loan. Beyond grants and loans, you also may participate in college work study. I also did this for a semester. Fun experience, and I worked in the career center doing data entry. I knew which internship jobs were being posted before anyone else lol.
2. Consider your savvy exam knowledge trumps scholarships ALL DAY LONG. Consider taking 10 CLEP (half for 3 and half for 6 credits) exams at a cost of $100 each = $1000 cost. At any community college, the value of tuition saved for 45 credits is about $4500 (minus your out of pocket of course) or a "scholarship" of $3500.
Take those same exams to a university where tuition is around $400 per credit and you've created your own "scholarship" that now is worth $17,000. No applications, essays, interviews, or waiting required.
