KCTCS - Letter of Good Standing - UptonSinclair - 09-10-2013

After reading about the "Learn on Demand" option at KCTCS, I applied online and have been told I need to get a letter of good standing from Excelsior before I can enroll in courses. Funny how you can take classes through major universities like BYU and CSU, but HillBilly Community College requires you to jump through hoops.

Now KCTCS wants official transcripts to waive prerequisites. They were more trouble than I have patience for.

After a frustrated morning dealing with KCTCS, I told them to withdraw my application. When I woke up this evening (day sleeper) I had email saying they accepted my CLEP score reports to waive the prerequisite requirement. I will have to wait until they receive the letter of good standing from Excelsior before I can take any courses though. It seems like they are sitting on this system that has great potential, but they are still in a traditional mindset.

Hillbilly community college? That's a little harsh...I live in northern KY and have attended KCTCS (Gateway actually) for the last two years and have had an excellent experience with them, every better than my local four year university. They suck at financial aid, but the rest of the staff and the quality of my classes have been great. I took a few learn on demand classes and they were pretty good too. They are far more accommodating for degree seeking students...They are strict with pre-reqs, but in my humble opinion, it is worth it!

I remember looking at KCTCS last year and it seemed like a lot of hassle. I think I just remember it being hard to navigate the site. But it was probably late and I was probably sleep deprived. Like now.

It's good to know what they require for any other potential students. Sorry you're going through such a hassle, but if you get the credits in the end that's what matters, right?

During my degree quest, I have wasted more time trying to do things "quickly" rather than I had just took the time. I should have been done last year.

Oh, man. Every day I feel like that. Mostly because I decided to go for the GRE Lit. subject test. I can't test until April. Sad

Just out of curiosity, why wait that long? Can you not get the same amount of credit through alternative means?

You are correct. I was frustrated and tired when I started this thread. Hillbilly CC was pretty harsh. I spent a year in Pikeville Kentucky as an Air Force recruiter which was a nightmare. Kentucky isn't one of my favorite places. With all of that said, I believe it is silly for a college to demand a letter from Excelsior when I am willing to pay for the classes and I am not asking for them to confer a degree.

The biggest problem with getting the letter of good standing is that Excelsior's Business and Technical College seems to run in two gears - slow and stop.

I thought it was funny.
