I'm trying to figure out the best way to satisfy the English composition requirement. I am military so I've been doing free cleps so the $440 Uexcel fee is not very appealing. Before I joined the military I took one semester of English. If I were to transfer this class to Excelsior could that count as my writing requirement and then Clep/Dante a 3 credit English course?

You could take the Straighterline english course ($150, including subscription). Or you could take the English Composition II TECEP exam for $99.

it depends on the course description for the course you took previously. Was it writing intensive or grammar intensive? My suggestion would be to take the English CLEP exam, College Composition it get 3 credits for Engl 1, and 3 credits for Engl 2 meeting that requirement regardless if you already have one of those credits it really doesn't matter because you get to take CLEP for free. If you just need Engl 1 credit then CLEP College Composition Modular is all you will need for 3 credits.

I have an update. Just looked at my old transcript for the first time in 9 years. Here it is ENGL 101 COMPOSITION C+ 5.0 I guess the school I went to went by quarters and says it is 5 credits. Does that change anything? And I was getting the impression that excelsior doesn't take english cleps anymore.

On further research I guess the class is equivalent to about 3 semester hours. So I'm thinking it should satisfy the writing requirement of excelsior. So I would just need a comp-102 equivalent. Does excelsior take Cleps for this?

5 quarter credits is equal to 3.33 semester credits and 3 semester credits is equal to 4.5 quarter credits. Simple

Excelsior, does have problems with the English Composition CLEP (one of the reason I took both at EC) You might get 3.5 credits from Excelsior for your five quarter hours so you should try and transfer it in. (they gave me 3 semester hours for 4 quarter hours from Strayer last year) It might go towards your humanities requirement otherwise. As far as I'm aware a college Class gets transcribed before a CLEP will so your English Class will be applied before an English CLEP which might end up as a duplicate credit. Others who know better or have more experience feel free to educate us

As far as I know, the only exam Excelsior accepts for their Writing requirement is their own. I would suggest Straighterline as an alternative. Be sure to read your catalog carefully. Excelsior is very picky about the Written English Requirement.

If you are planning a Bachelor's degree, you should get transfer credit for English Comp I, but you will still need English Comp II. You won't be able to test out of Comp II. The only testing option is the 6 credit Excelsior exam.
