Excelsior Degree Help/Questions - Mindcrime30 - 05-06-2014

Hi all, my name is Anthony, and I have a few questions about Excelsior College. I have made use of the search function, and have been doing a lot of reading over the past few hours, but there is so much info that it can be hard to dissect it all.

As I currently stand, I have 53 credits from my local community college; my understanding is that I can transfer all of these credits to Excelsior. To further this, I believe that I would need an additional 68 credits in order to graduate with a 4 year degree in business. Am I correct in assuming that I can take all of these credits, with the exception of one capstone class, by testing out?

If I can test out of all the credits, is there a list anywhere of required exams to fulfill the degree program? I don't want to apply to Excelsior yet, as I am trying to avoid the expenses of attending.

I am just wondering if I am on the right track with my research, and curious if anybody has any tips for me.

My current list of credits are below if it helps:

3c Office Software
3c Eco 101
3c Eco202
3c Ethics 207
4c Financial Acct
4c Managerial Acct
3c Business Law 1
3c Business Law 2
3c Bus Management
3c His 104
3c His 103
3c English 101
4c Chemistry w/ Lab
3c Medical Terminology (Bio)
3c Psychology 101
3c Music
1c Phys Ed
1c Phys Ed

Thanks in advance for any help, I look forward to learning more and contributing to the forums!

Edit- I also hold 2 insurance licenses, as both an agent and a broker. I believe this could be worth credit?

Excelsior has a PDF where they spell out exactly how to get a degree by exams alone (except for the capstone) and yes, Bachelor of Science in Business, General Business Concentration is one of the "exam only" degrees.

The only way to know how your current credits will be treated is to ask Excelsior directly. There's no guarantee until they tell you which credits they'll apply to the degree.

I would caution you about waiting until the end to enroll though, because enrolling does give you the security of getting in during a specific set of rules and having confidence in that set of rules applying to you and not changing. When you wait, their policies could change, and then you'd be having to retake exams to fulfill other requirements.

Why did you choose Excelsior?

Hi.

I am within 30 minutes of Excelsior, which I could see helping if there were any issues. Overall it seemed like a wash between the 3, so i just defaulted to Excelsior.

If you have another recommendation for me, I am all ears.

Thanks a bunch.

Does Excelsior talk to students in person? If they hold their graduation in New York, that would be convenient. Excelsior wouldn't be my first choice for a business degree, but it's flexible enough.

What would be your first choice? I'm far from set on Excelsior.

Excelsior does hold their graduation in Albany. I wouldn't really use that as a criterion to pick the school.

When you say Excelsior isn't your first choice for a business degree, you mean an all-exam business degree?

Mindcrime,

I'm an Excelsior Business student, If you sign up with Excelsior you should be able to get In State tuition grants of some kind from New York. It is possible to enroll and test out of the majority of your degree at Excelsior (EC) but it depends on what type you are going for, The Physical location benefit is mainly for tuition, I'm not sure you would get to talk to someone in person if you actually drove down there. You may not be able to transfer "All" your credits from Community College but you should be able to transfer the majority of them. You can apply for an evaluation of your credits and with a bit of negotiation I was able to transfer in a significant proportion of my Irish credits in. My official evaluation and my initial evaluation turned out to be the same amount of transfer credits. There are a number of debates as to how to enroll there. I'm in a partnership program (POAG) which cuts my cost per credit hour and reduces my enrollment fee each year. If you go in as a partnership student or a Military student there are residency requirements, 12 credits for the partnership. Each credit you take reduces your graduation fee by a small amount. From the looks of the credits you've listed you should be able to cover a decent amount of your electives and social science requirements with them. You can test out of a lot of the core requirements too and some of the General Education ones you haven't already accumulated. Your upper level credits are difficult to test out of exclusively but there are ECE (now called Uexcel) tests which are counted as upper level.
