World Cup - Leebo - 06-21-2014 Anyone following it? Really big match for the US tomorrow. World Cup - sanantone - 06-21-2014 I don't follow soccer. I'm just ecstatic the Spurs won the championship. World Cup - bluebooger - 06-21-2014 I've watched a couple of matches, but I have no idea what's going on https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=world%20cup&safe=off supposedly "head to head" wins doesn't determine who advances, but score differential dose ? I watched a match today where some guy scored a goal and the ref said he was offsides or something ? but the announcer said it was a bad call I had no idea what they were talking about but its kinda fun to watch a little World Cup - Leebo - 06-22-2014 The first phase is the "group stage" where groups of 4 teams each play a little mini-season against each other. The first and second place teams in each group advance. After that, it becomes a single elimination tournament. The offside rule is difficult to see in real time. Essentially, a player cannot be standing closer to the goal than 2nd to last defender (the last defender being the goalie) when a pass is kicked to them. If the offensive player is standing past the 2nd to last defender when a pass is played to them, they are in an offside position. As you can imagine, this is very difficult for the refs to determine, but they do get like 95% or more of them right. It stops the offensive team from just leaving someone next to the goal who they pass it past everyone to. I heard there was controversy about a call in the Bosnia/Nigeria game, and it sounded like the ref just decided to call it back because he wasn't sure. Obviously not what you want, but that's rare. World Cup - scorched - 06-22-2014 Having played most of my life, the world cup is everything to me. US still has a long way to go, to be a powerhouse. They will be lucky to advance this year. World Cup - Leebo - 06-22-2014 Indeed, but I think the match tonight is doable. Can't wait. World Cup - Prloko - 06-22-2014 Leebo Wrote:Indeed, but I think the match tonight is doable. Can't wait. Living in Europe for the last 4 years, you can imagine how huge it is here. I don't watch football/soccer religiously, but I really love the intensity of the World Cup games. The matches are great and it's unfortunate that us Americans have a cultural bias against the sport. World Cup - Leebo - 06-22-2014 Well, that first half could have been better. Could have been worse too, I suppose. World Cup - sanantone - 06-22-2014 Prloko Wrote:Living in Europe for the last 4 years, you can imagine how huge it is here. I think it's more about Americans being used to games where scoring is a regular occurrence. I know that I don't like hockey or soccer because there is a lot of back and forth without much being accomplished. I liked playing soccer for fun, but I just can't watch it without wanting to fall asleep. No offense to soccer fans. That's just how I and many other Americans feel. Baseball has also been struggling. That's another sport I can't watch. World Cup - Leebo - 06-22-2014 Ouch. Well, hopefully that last goal doesn't come back to bite us. US can still advance, but my goodness... |
