College Composition CLEP Essay Feedback HELP! - ShaeZ - 07-05-2014
I have a college composition clep scheduled for Tuesday, and I would like opinions on whether I should postpone it or not. I am pretty good on the multiple choice section, but I am worried about the essay portion. I am going to copy one of the essays I wrote earlier today, would you please tell me if you think I can pass with a similar essay or not, as well as any feedback to improve. Please and thank you!!
Should negative advertisements in political campaigns be banned?
Political campaigns are often centered around negative advertising. These advertisements focus on attacking the candidate's opponents, instead of what the candidate stands for. In addition this, these advertisements often present information out of context, or show things that happened years prior and are no longer true. A ban on smear campaigns would change the way campaigns in the United Stated are carried out, forcing a positive light on them. Negative advertising in political campaigns should be banned.
Contenders that hold that negative advertising is beneficial to the campaigning process will say that if the negative is not brought up then people will be voting while misinformed. There is a sliver of truth in that. It is possible that a candidate will be able to hide his or her past, however this is true with negative advertising as well. The nature of negative campaigning lends itself to twisting information, and because of this the information we receive from these campaigns holds very little truth to them. Many people are already misinformed when they vote.
Negative advertisements run rampant in political campaigns, because it is easier to tear an opponent down then to stand out. Finding a comment in an opponents past and twisting it into something negative is easier than defining what you stand for and staying with that. In addition, because the political campaigns are all shouting negative comments, a voice of reason is often drowned out. The easy road is often chosen by politicians during their campaigns.
Negative advertising is the dominant strategy for most political campaigns. Winston Churchill once said 'To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.' It is time the political system is improved, and in order to accomplish that it must change. The first step is to place a ban on negative advertising, so that reason can be heard. In light of all of this, negative advertising in political campaigns should be banned.

It's above 300 words, so it's a good length, and you made very good points. The closing paragraph is especially good. Very few grammatical/proofreading errors. Just one observation, you only have 4 paragraphs. College Comp CLEP takers generally go for 5.
Do a few more like these and you should be good to go!

Did you do the essay in the time allowed for it? If so, you did a good job, and you're ready to go. Westerner is right about errors. As to Westerner's point about the five paragraphs, it is a common theme in advice about this exam. I don't know if it is advice given in an REA book, or another site, or what. My memory of the length of my essay is hazy. It makes sense, though. One paragraph to tell 'em what you're going to tell 'em. Three paragraphs, each with one main point to support your position. And then a final paragraph to tell 'em what you told 'em.
