Aleks process with TESC - Baf - 10-02-2014 Hello everyone, I want to take the college algebra and statistics course through Aleks to fulfill the math requirements for the TESC BSBA. I have a couple of questions after researching the forum. Is it true that if you score 70% or more on the first assessment, then you can request credit from ACE to send to TESC? Is there a proctored exam? Final? (I've read that there isn't but that seems strange...) I've also seen that ACE was no longer accrediting Aleks courses at one point but that now they do? I plan on e-mailing TESC but wanted to get input from people who have used Aleks. Thanks for your help! Aleks process with TESC - AquaDragonfly - 10-02-2014 We just discussed this in another thread recently... yes you can test-out of the ALEKS classes at 70%. As far as I know there is NO proctoring! It's $40 to register with ACE and have them send a transcript to TESC (do it when all your ALEKS classes are done, so it's a one-time fee). There are several ALEKS classes that have ACE credits now. HTH! Lori in NY Aleks process with TESC - Baf - 10-02-2014 So the very first assessment that you take that is supposed to place you where you need to be in the course, if you score more than 70% in that, you're good? (Sorry I'm a newbie, I just want to understand this before I dive into it) I searched the forum and didn't find it. Thanks for your help! Aleks process with TESC - cookderosa - 10-02-2014 here's the scoop: it's true that there was a blip of time when ALEKS wasn't current on their ACE evaluation, but when the got current, everyone's work was counted, so it's business as usual. ALEKS is a curriculum - some (not all) of their maths are for credit. Be sure you look for the * marking next to the class that verifies it is ACE-evaluated for college credit. You pay per month for ALEKS, so the faster (or slower) you progress determines the cost. You must create an account with ACE. This is FREE. Do this first. When you enroll in math with ALEKS, there is a pie (homework) and a test (assessment). You'll take an initial assessment. Yes, if you score 70% or more you're done. At that time, go into your ACE account and request that they add your ALEKS math to your transcript. This does NOT COST ANYTHING. Once it is showing up on your ACE transcript, go back into ALEKS and start your next class. This verification/documentation process can be slow especially if it's a holiday or weekend, so plan for a few days, and if it's faster- just be happy .If you've still got time left on your ALEKS account, and desire, start another course. You have the whole month, so if you just paid, might as well grab all the low hanging fruit you can! Now- if you don't hig 70%..... No big deal. You'll do the problems in your pie until you learn enough for the system to automatically issue you another assessment OR you can go in on the master account and issue yourself one. Either way, it's the ASSESSMENT that must be passed 70% or greater- not the pie. You could be 100% in the pie, but the class is not for credit until you pass your assessment. There is no proctoring of any kind- this is a home test. When you have finished all of your ALEKS classes, at that point, you request 1 ACE transcript. You'll pay for that 1 transcript ($40 I think) and it will be sent to your school. It will have every ALEKS course on it (as well as any of your other ACE courses). Hope that helps!! Enjoy! EDIT: I wanted to add that many people here, including myself, scored VERY LOW on their initial assessment. I think my initial stats score was like 3% lol. I just kept plugging away. Don't worry if you're not at a high % when you take your initial assessment! My kids and I have done lots of ALEKS classes, some easier than others. I know you can apply Intro to statistic, and College Alg. to the BSBA degree at TESC. Do you know if any of the other math courses on Aleks can be used on the degree? Thanks again! Aleks process with TESC - smf6824 - 10-03-2014 Do precalculus or trigonometry as well. Intermediate algebra too. Use mathway.com to your advantage. Aleks process with TESC - AquaDragonfly - 10-03-2014 Jennifer, can you stop your ALEKS subscription then come back and resubscribe at a later date and start where you left off, or doesn't it save your progress if you do that? ALEKS does NOT save your work in progress or completed- do NOT end your subscription!!!!! In fact, after you finish your first course, and go on to your second, your first will be erased. BE SURE to add each completed course to your ACE transcript as you go!!!!!

Use this link for the course list over at ALEKS: Independent Use (Parents) - ACE Credit Courses Understand that you can get credit- but you can never duplicate credit, and some of the ALEKS classes are considered duplicates. There are 4 ALEKS classes that you can take for a total of 12 credits plus 1 MATH CLEP for 6 more! Here is the TESC acceptance pattern from the past several years: REMEDIAL 001 Beginning Algebra- MAT089, 3 credits *note that's under 100 level, so won't count toward your degree CHOOSE 1 002 Intermediate Algebra- MAT115, 3 credits *meets minimum math requirement for almost every degree except science, business, or math degrees. Most can stop here without going higher. CHOOSE 1 CLEP college math MAT102/103, 6 credits *I include this CLEP to show you that this does not duplicate the other maths, meaning after get through intermediate, you could grab these 6 credits with no extra preparation. CHOOSE 1 003 College Algebra- MAT121, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate College Algebra w/trig 004 College Algebra with Trig- MAT121, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate College Algebra CHOOSE 1 005 PreCal- MAT129, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate Trig 006 Trig- MAT129, 3 credits *TESC Duplicates PreCal CHOOSE 1 007 Intro Stats- STA201, 3 credits *TESC Duplicates all other stats 009 Stats for Beh. Science- STA201, 3 credits *TESC Duplicate all other stats 008 Business Stats- OPM351, 3 credits *TESC Duplicates all other stats Aleks process with TESC - KayV - 10-04-2014 And if you discover a passion for math, you can also take Calculus I (MAT-231, 4 credits) from Saylor, as well as their Business Statistics (OPM-351, 3 credits), for only the ProctorU fee. Straighterline offers Calculus I (MAT-231, 3 credits) and Calculus II (MAT-232, 3 credits) for their usual fees. Oh, also there is a TECEP exam called Applied Liberal Arts Mathematics that could be taken right after Intermediate Algebra (MAT-105, 3 credits). |
