This is not an option for online students whose schools are far away, but I noticed this past semester that one of my classmates had gotten his textbook from the library. Graduate students at my university are allowed to check out books for 6 months. I was able to find most of my books for the spring semester in the library saving me a lot of money.

You're not dumb, I didn't think of it either till recently. In fact, I also discovered that I can get many of the books through interlibrary loan. Since I have a long commute for work, I've been using my Audible membership to purchase required texts to listen to. That's also been a big help.

I forgot about the interlibrary loan thing, but I'll probably just purchase the last two books. One is only $11. I'm just mad that I purchased books for four semesters before finding this out.

It'll date me, but I first did this for an econmics class years ago. The library had the previous edition. The only difference between the library's and the newest edition was a chapter on trickle down economics. I borrowed a classmate's edition to read about that, and didn't pay a cent for a book. I love libraries.

hubby and I just took advantage of this too. He is an MBA student at the same university he teaches for, and can get some (not all) of his text via interlibrary loan.

It greatly varies by school. One of the largest community colleges in the nation has a policy that the school libraries will not loan copies of any books used in courses at the school. They might have a copy on short term (1-2 hour) reserve that can't be checked out. I asked to check out a certain textbook and the librarian gave me a lecture that I had no business being in school if I couldn't afford to buy a textbook.
City or county libraries may be able to do an interlibrary loan. While that may not work for a long semester, the length of loan might be adequate for a miniterm.
Just ask, you might get lucky!

I posted a few months ago about checking out the latest editions from the library, which is much cheaper than renting. See the post here. The only downside for me, as an undergrad checking out from the public library, was the short amount of time the books can be checked out for. It's great that as a graduate student you won't have that issue!

Trading books with other students is another great way to save hundreds of dollars on textbooks, as long as you don't plan to keep your books forever.
