Hey DF Forum members. I thought I'd share a really informative IT Salary guide I found on the internet. It was developed by Robert Half, a staffing firm. What I like about it is that it is more specific than other products I've seen out there or anything from the BLS.

It's totally free with no sign up required, just click the red button to download. If you have trouble downloading the PDF, try a different web-browser. I had trouble trying to use FireFox, and instead used another and it worked.
The link also has an IT salary calculator that you can play with.

Tech as a whole is booming and I don't think it's going away like with the Dotcom bubble. It's a great place to be right now - better than most fields in medicine, law, or business for certain reasons in terms of return on investment. We're in a bit of a bubble right now, but more so in software development/tech startups I think. But on the commercial side at least things are looking pretty good.

We have a strange IT market here in Colorado Springs. Many of the jobs require a security clearance and certifications while offering salary in the $40k range.

I've had the opportunity in my career (as an IT hiring manager) to compare the Robert Half guide to a pair of databases used by two different companies' HR departments, and the Robert Half guide was 5-10% higher than the HR databases. This is important, so that you are using realistic guidance when negotiating the salary with a potential employer. Recall that Robert Half is typically compensated with a significant percentage of the first year's salary for their recruiting efforts, so it is in their best interest to err on the high side. I believe they are statistically within the margin of error, so not unethical.

Pittsburgh market is a little strange. The salary range for an experienced System Engineer can go from $55k to over $120k. Normally the bigger companies offer the higher salaries, but even some of them low ball people.

best places to be for tech are silicon valley, seattle, LA, and maybe Atlanta/DC/North Carolina.
NYC if you're doing something in finance-related.

The actual tasks for positions like System Engineer vary significantly from company to company. Some companies have this as a senior technical position, some it's a glorified helpdesk role.

If you have significant security clearance, and a unique technical ability, I would suggest expanding your search to the Virginia area. Most of the jobs i've seen there are priced 2 to 3*(market rate of job without clearance). This is a huge enhancer for tech positions (particularly Cisco and/or voice related).
