Hi all,
I am a distance student living in China, but getting a BA through a University in America.
It looks like my college accepts both AP and CLEP for the *one year* standard equivalent in Language.
Since I'm in China, obviously Chinese would be a good one to go for.
Spanish could also work due to its ease compared to Mandarin.
Anyone care to compare AP Chinese / Spanish VS. CLEP Chinese / Spanish?
All my research points to AP being tougher, but I'm not sure.

I can't really help with the Spanish vs Mandarin question, but I don't think that there is a Chinese CLEP, only French, German, and Spanish.

I'm not sure that AP exams are available to students outside of high school. You might also consider ACTFL credit options because you can get a lot more credits if you have in-depth language knowledge. There are tons of ACE credit options through both the Oral Proficiency Interview and the Writing Proficiency Test.

Finding a high school in China that gives AP exams might be tricky. And, you have to make arrangements to take the exam with the school (if they agree to let you sit for the exam at all), and apply by the deadline, and then take the exam on the exact day/time they give it (all schools give the same tests on the same day across the US). So for that exam, it's May 5th at 12pm. Not exactly a convenient schedule for most non-high school students.
There is no Chinese language CLEP.
I agree with ladylearner that you should do the ACTFL exam instead. If you're fluent, you get a lot more credits for it than AP (up to 14 for oral, and another 14 for written). If your school accepts this test.

Oh my. All I need is a year equivalent in any language.
Also, I am not fluent in any language besides English. The point was to study and learn either Spanish or Mandarin (while in China)
My school says they accept CLEP or AP. I wonder about the High School thing, though. I can find a Chinese HS to take the AP at, but...I'll contact them.
Will have to read up on it more and ask questions. I thought the AP was something anyone could do.

AP is open to any age. You have to find a testing site, which does have to be a high school.
AP is a poor choice imo. It doesn't yield a lot of credit and it's offered once a year.
I don't know if the university you are attending accepts any other brand of exam (there is no such thing as Chinese CLEP) but there are other exams you can use. I agree with ACTFL. The other is NYU Foreign Language Proficiency Exam.
EDIT: I also wanted to ask, if you don't mind, which university you're attending?

Also, look into an exam program called BYU FLATS. (If I recall correctly, EC accepted them, but TESU did not. You'll want to double-check that, if you are attending the Big3.)
