Can you help me plan my degree path? - High_Order1 - 03-02-2016 Hi! This site came *highly* recommended. Like at the other forum, I apologize if I offend anybody by wanting to find a direct route to the cheese; I know for many, college is a long, arduous process, and it may appear like I am trying to short cut that process. My career field doesn't require much in the way of training, less a degree (although, this is starting to trend differently now). Regardless, I availed myself of any training opportunity I could shoehorn myself into, and kept all the certs in a book, as well as making a list. Almost none of those are valuable as anything. Few count towards promotion, and I still need a degree if I want to teach in more places than I am eligible now. Also, a degree would allow me to check the box on some Federal applications (I'm already well qualified by their standards, but as boilerplate they require a degree. Any degree.) So, they say y'all may be able to help me sort this out. :toetap: If I just apply to the big 3, and send them my lists, what does that cost / involve? Wouldn't it be smarter to already have things sewn up? If I am short several things, and you guys find me better routes to those credits, do any re-evaluations cost again? I think I have enough to basically flesh out a Bachelors degree. I would prefer it in homeland security, terrorism, or as a last resort, criminal justice (there are a *lot* of candidates with that credential) with a touch of administration. I don't care where it comes from really, as long as it is a credible, non-diploma mill source, and I think it really needs to be regionally accredited. It's *definitely* gotta pass a three minute google keyword search, and not be blacklisted at the Federal or Tennessee state level. I have about thirty hours from a community college when I went in the early 90's. The police academy I attended also gave me a certificate, and said it was worth around 21 credit hours. I have several 40 hour schools I have a *ton* of online training. (my complete list of training is nine pages at around ten point font) What do I need to help someone help me understand what I need to do next? eeya: I'm pretty good at training and testing and reading, but for some reason, this particular topic has me spinning in circles. banghead I don't want to waste time and money when there are others who really, really appear to have a handle on this. I would prefer 0 coursework as a best practice. Sincere thanks, High Order Can you help me plan my degree path? - tesu-acct-student - 03-02-2016 Good morning, I've been a TESU student off and on for a few years so I can help with a few of these questions. I don't have direct experience with the other two schools. As far as applying to all three and submitting your transcripts to them, that makes sense. It's not what I did mainly because I didn't know it was an option, but it makes sense. If you can afford the application fees then yea I think you should do it. It will help you figure out which school will take the most of your credits. Re-evaluations don't cost anything at TESU. You can even do a preliminary re-eval yourself through the online Student Services portal if you are a student there. If you choose TESU and if some of your credits don't transfer in, you can still use them as some of your evidence in a PLA. Thomas Edison State University: Prior Learning Assessment Because of these forums I have since learned that there are other options for PLA but I can't comment on them because I have not used them. TESU's PLA is reasonably priced, imo. Once you have some idea of the holes in your degree plan you will have a better idea about how to fill them in, and people here will definitely be able to help you with that. Take care. Can you help me plan my degree path? - davewill - 03-02-2016 Go ahead and bust out the list of ctedits you have already, and whatever you know or can find out about your police academy credits. Then we can start to piece together what schools and degree programs might work for you and what credits you should pursue while waiting for your evals to come back. The last thing you want to do is just sit around not making progress towards your degree. Can you help me plan my degree path? - High_Order1 - 03-02-2016 mmm Ok. Was the police cert from the community college made up of individual courses worth specific numbers of credits? If not, you might want to enquire exactly how they figured that 21 credits and how they are listed on a transcript. I don't think most of that will help towards your degree, but I've been surprised before. So much of it is all in one general area, that it can only help so much anyway. Can you help me plan my degree path? - High_Order1 - 03-02-2016 ... Sorry. I may have misread. Credit wise, only the community college for sure. I have requested through ACE 3 hours for a basic 40 hour class I took through Wackenhut / G4S, and another thing I can't remember off the top of my head. I feel pretty confident about the Walters' State credit, but I will have to find out how that translates into classes / courses. I can erase the remainder of the list, if it isn't helpful.
