Need help using Ctrl+F Search function with Ebooks on Straighterline Exams - Limeyswife - 04-01-2016
Hi Everyone,
I'm new here so I thought I'd give a brief introduction! I'm a homeschooling mama of 4. My oldest is 15 and has so far accumulated 4 credits from our local community college (Spanish 1) and 6 credits from Straighterline (USHist1 and American Gov.) I am actually taking the Straighterline courses as well, working my way towards a degree along with my daughter! Such fun!
Anyway...before I pose my question I would like to say that I've spent the last two days reading through hundreds of posts and have gathered a ton of great info. I'm so grateful that I found this site. However, I haven't been able to find specific tips and tricks for using the search feature in the bookshelf. I have tried using ctrl+F and searching for specific terms, even single words that are on my test questions and the search returns zero results in most cases. For instance, several of the questions on my US History II test are regarding Roosevelt...however the only results that come up in my book search using the term "roosevelt" are from a infographic in the appendix. WHAT THE HECK am I doing wrong??? Please help!

Hmm, that's interesting. Usually when I search, I use more than one word just to minimize on the matches, then go through whatever was found.
There could have been a figure/picture embedded in that document and it went to that figure/picture that contained the same name.
Does this happen with every course PDF file you have access to, or other PDF documents that you can do a few test searches in?

Could the eBook possibly be a scan of a paper book? When that's the case, then the text is not searchable as it isn't text, but just a picture of text. Some software (Acrobat for one) can do OCR on the scanned book and create a searchable result.

I have run into this a couple of times using the e-books from the bookshelf. Remember to search for the relevant words only, consider to remove any spaces before or after the searchable word (especially if you copy and paste the word in the search box). It helps to remove any punctuation from the searchable word or group of words. I have found at times the books will use acronyms and the test will have the full name in the question or vice versa, so be cautious when searching.
Use the index to your benefit, this will zero into a specific chapter for you to search for an answer.
