Trying to decide what to do for my last TECEP... - Mamasaphire - 05-17-2016
I'm down to needing 6 TESU Residency credits (out of the 16). Three credits will be covered by the Capstone, so I just need to pass one more TECEP.
I am registered for both Nutrition and Eng Comp II TECEPs in the May semester, just to give myself more wiggle room mentally. They are both showing up as replacements for courses that I had already taken years ago. I know I am just about past the 25% refund point, so am not as concerned about that, but am now wondering which of those two TECEPs I should focus on taking as my (hopefully) final 3 Residency credits.
Would it make a difference if one subject's original grade was lower than the other (so taking the TECEP for that subject would bump it off my Academic Eval)? Or is one an easier pass than another? I'd normally say I'd like to go with the one I am most interested in (nutrition), but have a lot on my non-academic plate right now and am a bit overwhelmed with life in general :willynilly: , so am thinking of just doing whichever TECEP I can most likely pass most easily... is that the perspective I should be using (and if so, which one might be easier)?

Absolutely pick the easiest one...especially since they duplicate credits you already have earned. The grade thing could have some merit, especially if you got a "D", but when you apply for a Master's, the school will ask for all the original transcripts and calculate their own GPA. They won't rely on TESUs calculations. There's no guarantee they will make the same substitution.

So which one is known for being easier? Lol.
I got a C+ in Human Nutrition which is my lowest non-math grade ever. It had to do with being 18 and having strong opinions on health related topics that were in complete opposition to the elderly (literally) teacher. He would eat junk food and drink soda in class while telling us that as long as he occasionally ate green peas he would be fine. It was before I understood that tests/college classes aren't really to learn the truth, but they are rather to spit out the answer the teacher/test is looking for, lol.
Anywhoo, the pro for taking Nutrition TECEP would be that it's completely multiple choice, but the con is that I'd likely have to do quite a bit more studying for it. The pro for Eng Comp II would be that I don't mind writing -- the main cons are that I am a slow typist and almost ran short of time on Eng Comp II, and that I can't remember a lot of citation rules off the top of my head.

Hmm, since you're registered for both. I would suggest going for both and taking some time to study and practice a bit of typing by creating your own version of chapter notes for the recommended textsbooks for Nutrition. If you already have previous textbooks, even better, write your own Coles Notes version on things you don't fully grasp. This way, you get some more typing practice and memory retention of the info, you don't have to print it, save as a word doc or PDFs.
In regards to English Comp, review what's available in the TESU OER materials and again, write simple form notes if anything doesn't fully click with you. I usually read things once, make my own notes and review chapter intro/end and other notes that are provided. Either on you choose, it will be fine. When are they scheduled? If they are spread out further, you'll have more time for each one, if not, do the Nutrition notes first.

I guess I'd give a slight nod to the multiple choice test. With that one you should get the score immediately which would allow you to buckle down on the other one if you didn't pass...but you're going to pass, so I wouldn't worry.

I can only talk about the English Comp II, but I thought it was an easy pass, with no studying required. Of course, the no studying is reflected in my score of a 79%, but I didn't really care about that. A couple of tricks: you can bring the handbook for the test, so no memorization required. I put sticky notes on the pages I needed (from the test guide), so that part was pretty easy. The other thing I now know is that there is a part where you have to create a thesis; then you go to the next section (and you can't go back) and you have to elaborate on that. If I were you, I would copy anything you write, and then you can paste it in the next section if need be. I wish I would have known that going into it, and not had to start over and re-create the thesis and then elaborate.
Anyway, I would take 1 exam; if you took Nutrition and passed, I would not take English II. But if you want to try your hand at English II first, I would do that fairly early because you have to wait 2-3 weeks for your score.

Studying for Nutrition would probably make more sense, but you can certainly take them seperately. May be worth just giving the Comp test a shot early to see how you do.

+1, As I mentioned earlier, since you're registered for both and it's already paid for, spread it out and take the Nutrition course first and then the Eng Comp.
With your previous Nutrition experience, it should be an easier exam, especially when you've got the multiple choice option. You can hopefully ace that.
The Eng Comp is your backup option, again if it's paid for, just go for it... spread that out as much as you can and do what you think is required for studying.

I think I'm going to bump them both out to the end of the month due to conflicts in my schedule. If, for some random reason I don't pass either one, I'll just have to take an online TESU course in the fall. The downfall to that will be cost, but I can at least do something that will fit into my UL AOS.
