How to Get Upper Level Science Credits? - Laura27282 - 08-18-2016

Good Morning,

I just signed up for this site, but I've been lurking all summer. I'm with Excelsior, Liberal Arts school. Transferred 59 credits from a community college.

My first choice for a degree is Natural Science. I'm transferring chemistry 1, intro to anatomy, and biology 1. There are plenty of lower level science tests to take. The problem with that degree is getting upper level science credits. I don't idea how to get them without taking them out an actual school. The only test out option I've seen is for upper level is Pathophysiology. I looked at the first chapter, honestly I don't think I have the stomach for it. :/ I'm more interested in earth sciences. I'm ok with anatomy and other basic stuff, but when you get into diseases and trauma it is different.

My second degree choice is Social Science with the environmental science concentration. The problem is in less interested in social science/history. I started the Study.com lessons for Social Science and History exam- 600 lessons/quizzes! And so much reading. But it is easier to get SS upper credits.

Any advice of on getting upper science credits? I work as a lab assistant, through that I have unlimited access to these courses through the ASCP. I don't see any that match Excelsior course. I'm also signed up for Study.com and have created a Saylor account.

The only upper level Science credits I know of that you can take online are these from TESU I did the first one and it was interesting. Global Environmental Change (ENS-314)
Environmental Sustainability and Social Justice (ENS-360) Man's Best Friend: The Biology and Behavior of Dogs (BIO-310). When I earned my BA in natural science from TESC they still gave upper level credit if that was what a CC gave it. I took Organic Chemistry I & 2 with Lab at local cc that was 10 upper level credits. I do not know of any exams for upper level Science credit. Upper level credits are always harder to earn. Good luck with your degree. I worked in a Laboratory for over 30 years starting out in Biochem and ending in Polymer Chem it was an interesting 1st career. I still miss the Lab it has been about 5 years since I did any lab work.

Edit: Yeah, nevermind. I tend to jump the gun and assume everyone is going with TESU.

you do not have to be a TESU student to take their courses (or at least it used to be that way) but it could be expensive.

There is UC Berkeley Extension. Course codes X100-X199 are upper division and for college credit. However, their science courses are mostly in biology

Look at AMU/APU:
Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences

Pretty cheap and even cheaper if you qualify for their military rate.

I just read the AMU/APU accreditation page ( 3X's) and I am still not sure if they have RA accreditation. It does not matter in some fields or positions, but when I wanted to teach in NJ my degree had to be from an RA school.

AMU/APU is accredited by HLC (so regionally). It also is specialized/programmatic accreditation through: ACBSP(Business) and CCNE (Nursing) among others.

I did not know that HLC means RA I was just looking for them to say they were regionally accredited RA I am simple and look for simple answers. If HLC means they are RA why not just say We are regionally accredited by HLC. that would be clearer to me.

These are independent study courses for teachers, prefixed as SCI-9XX. As always, get them approved by your advisor.

FWIW, I have taken some of their math courses and they were good.
