Hey folks,

So, I'm normally very good at anything math related, but I just can't get any of the stats courses I've tried to click. Saylor, Straighterline, ALEKS, this is killing me. Anyone know a good video series that starts at the basics and brings you up through? I can't take the bouncing around between different instructors/instruction types from the ones I've found previously. This is my biggest stumbling block right now. I've more or less put everything else on pause until I get this one knocked out.

haven't watched these videos
http://www.degreeforum.net/general-education-testing-discussion/26693-aleks-statistics-youtube-help.html#post213002
but I heard they were good

I love this site
Data, Probability and Statistics
just start at the top and work your way down the links
I never understood standard deviation until I saw the chart of dog heights on their page
Standard Deviation and Variance

you can go here
Statistics.com - Course Calendar
and take
Statistics 1 – Probability and Study Design
Statistics 2 – Inference and Association
and get ACE credit
(the two above are the same as their Introductory Statistics for Credit)

I haven't taken those two courses from them, but I have taken a Python course, 3 R courses, and an SQL course --- all ACE accredited -- Excelsior accepted them all

There is a Udacity MOOC made by San Jose State University that was designed to be less math based lectures to make statistics more fun/easy. It might help you to get through ALEKS, Saylor, or another method. The link is as follows:

Math is my bugaboo too. I wish you all the best. Smile

Ikwym. In fact I've mentioned it on the df in the past, lol. The only course I've seen that I think I *might* be able to learn from and complete is Intro Stats from study.com. Have you perused the lessons there?

I feel your pain! I struggle with it, and I've done the College Algebra without a lot of trouble.

When I was in CC, there was an intro class called Finite Math that got you ready for Stats. I took it and got an easy A, but then didn't take Stats (of course). Shmoop has it, and I'm considering taking it to try to ramp up (it's been 20+ years).

I would try the free stuff first and see if that doesn't help. Khan Academy as well as anything anyone on here recommends.

If its an option, just do the DSST exam. I took the DSST exam only studying a statistics textbook and memorizing some of the formulas. Get a good financial calculator and you're good to go. I passed this with 1 month of studying. The DSST is concept based with some formulas, so I would highly recommend you stop beating yourself up with ALEKs.

You might do better with a book that you can use as reference, too. I still like the Idiots Guide to Statistics.

I started with ALEKS but it melted my brain somewhere around 50%. I watched the free Against All Odds series over at Learner.org and then rented the Standard Deviants through Netflix. I planned to go back and finish with ALEKS but instead I switched to Khan Academy videos. I took notes and worked the problems in the videos. At that point, I decided to try the DSST. If I failed, I would finish with ALEKS, but I passed!
My math background: I've never taken Algebra. Not even in high school. You can do it!

The way I learned stats is very strange but it worked for me. I learned how to do all the calculation in Excel (yes it does everything I had to do for my Stats course for CC.) Then I reverse engineered it. Once I figured out the answer it was easy to tweak all the steps to figure out how to do it on paper. Once I learned how to do it on paper and outside of excel I did several other examples until I got them all right. Then I wrote myself out a step sheet and used that for studying. I feel like this was extra work but I got an A in the class and it worked a lot better then trying to learn it from step a - z. Z-A worked better for me.

Also... bonus note.. some of the stuff it way easier then they make it seem.

I tried Aleks but couldn't stand it. Did stats at the local cc.
