Are associate (AS) degrees from Excelsior recognized by Universities for transfer? - FrostX - 10-24-2016 I'm traveling a lot for the next year or two and would like to grab an Associates of Science degree online and then use it to transfer into a University with a Biotech or similar Engineering program. A lot of universities will automatically qualify transfer students for admissions if they simply have an associates degree. Is this a viable strategy with a degree from Excelsior, or do I risk the possibility of getting turned down? I know it varies between different Universities, but does anyone have experience with this? I ask because it almost just seems too easy, or too good to be true, especially if I take a lot of CLEP tests. Are associate (AS) degrees from Excelsior recognized by Universities for transfer? - davewill - 10-24-2016 Short answer, no. Some universities have articulation agreements with community colleges that work that way. Typically it will be 4-year state universities that accept public community college students in the same state. For instance, New Jersey public 4 year schools are required to accept an associates earned at a New Jersey community college as equivalent to the first two years. Absent an articulation agreement, you are just a transfer student and your transfer units are considered on their own merits. Which means if you use a bunch of alternative credit to get your AS at Excelsior, any random 4 year school may choose not to accept them. As a general rule, units earned at a regionally accredited school will transfer to most others, but there's no guarantee that they will meet any particular degree requirements. The value of the Big 3 is that their transfer policies are so liberal, which makes alternative credit useful. As soon as you transfer to another school, you lose that advantage. Articulation agreements are usually between CC's and State Colleges/Universities within a state. Some private colleges will also have articulation agreements with local CC's (nearest to their school). But there usually aren't agreements between 4-yr schools. The best thing to do here is to begin with the end in mind. Research the schools you are interested in going to, and see what their requirements are. See if they accept alternative credit. See what courses you have to take for the BA/BS. Then work backwards from there. Another thing you might want to think of: getting a 4-yr degree (Liberal Arts or Business are the easiest) from one of the Big 3, while making sure you get all of the requirements met for the school you want to go to for your other degree. They treat people going back to school for a second BA/BS degree differently than someone transferring with a 2-year degree. Since the degrees from the Big 3 are so affordable, this isn't as crazy as it sounds. Are associate (AS) degrees from Excelsior recognized by Universities for transfer? - cookderosa - 10-25-2016 If you'd like to get the AS ahead of attending a 4 year school, you might try finding a few target 4-year programs and looking at flexible AS that will transfer in perfectly. You mentioned CLEP, and as an example, the community college I worked for allowed 75% of the degree to be completed via CLEP - this wasn't an alternative college, it was the largest community college district in the state, so these opportunities exist if you look. My guess is that you could enroll at a community college as a distance learning student in your state, complete courses while traveling, and upon graduation you'd have a good way into the biotech program you want. The utility of Excelsior (as well as TESU and COSC) is when you're in the opposite situation. A person has accumulated a patchwork quilt of credits, sometimes over years, and wants to assemble a bachelor's degree. That's really when you get full flexibility from that type of program. OPTION 2: there are biotech (but not engineering) programs that you can do at the master's level as a distance learning student, meaning that you could complete the full bachelor's degree at Excelsior and then go to grad school for biotech instead of undergrad. Just throwing out ideas. Any idea where i can find this? You don't transfer to a master's. You earn your bachelor's, then you apply to a master's program. It's like starting over. If they like your application, you're in. You want to look at the admission reqs for the Masters. If they want a particular GPA, then you want to take some courses for grade. If they want certain courses as prerequisites, then make sure you have them. I would think that finding a program that is fine with an Excelsior degree shouldn't be that hard. |
