Want to do marketing degree...MBA with conc. in marketing or MSc in Marketing? - TESUAbroad - 02-16-2017 At this point I'd rather do a Masters of science in marketing but everything I've researched online has convinced me that the MBA in marketing is a more financially sound investment. Ack. :ack: My mind has been toiling away over this... Any thoughts? Want to do marketing degree...MBA with conc. in marketing or MSc in Marketing? - Yenisei - 02-16-2017 I'd agree with that. The MBA is a better brand name, so to speak, and is more flexible due its greater breadth. These specialized master's degrees in business are a relatively new phenomenon and are still perceived as being inferior to the MBA. A specialized Master degree (with a bachelor in business) can get you leg up on a specific career path. If I'm a Marketing Manager, I'd rather hire someone with 30+ credits of marketing coursework, over someone who took three or four elective courses. But, again, this is all subjective an everyone has different opinions, so your thought of course is just as valid. Being that you are doing a BSBA in Marketing, an MBA with Marketing will repeat almost all courses. A better bet IMHO, is to get an analytics focus as companies right now are struggling with the glut of data (from Social media, and beyond) and data scientists are struggling to apply their data to business applications. adding marketing with analytics would be perfect for marketing research and strategy. Want to do marketing degree...MBA with conc. in marketing or MSc in Marketing? - dfrecore - 02-16-2017 Both are valid points - an MBA is more general and flexible, while a MS is more specialized and in-depth. It really just depends on what you want to do with your degree. I think I would spend more time thinking about it, talking to people, looking at what jobs are requiring, etc. Talk to hiring managers. Talk to HR managers. Talk to recruiters. Talk to people who have the job that you want. Look at the programs you are interested and talk to those schools. Etc. As Yenisei said, specialized degrees for this area are in their infancy. There's Masters of science in marketing, marketing analytics, marketing research, marketing consumer behavior etc etc. As you said, this is an area that needs people. I think it'd be WAY more fun to be a in a consumer behavior marketing position than a marketing manager. I want to be focused on different areas to help businesses understand and implement consumer feedback. I really do not want to do anything too quantitative "Data scientist" is a very poorly designated as it describes varies roles, from just using tools to determine patterns to pure mathematical data analysis. So it could be something I am keen towards or not at all. Ideally I would be the guy in-between the raw number cruncher and the guy who just sees the results. The guy who can interpret the psychology behind consumer actions using the quantitative(statistical) data provided along with Qualitative data(focus groups, panels etc.) -most likely with a team- to create a research report that the company can utilize on a strategic level to benefit the company and the consumer. (Something within this spectrum, maybe designing questions, or identifying the problem for the company, finding patterns within the data) Want to do marketing degree...MBA with conc. in marketing or MSc in Marketing? - Prloko - 02-17-2017 TESUAbroad Wrote:Ideally I would be the guy in-between the raw number cruncher and the guy who just sees the results. Companies need this "middle-man" badly. Want to do marketing degree...MBA with conc. in marketing or MSc in Marketing? - TESUAbroad - 02-17-2017 Prloko Wrote:This is what I was getting at. Want to do marketing degree...MBA with conc. in marketing or MSc in Marketing? - Yenisei - 02-18-2017 Marketing doesn't occur in a vacuum- it's a cog in a larger wheel, so the overview provided by the MBA is useful, even for someone with a BSBA. I understand the argument for the greater depth of the MS in Marketing, and perhaps one that incorporates analytics well within the marketing context would be a game-changer.
