Unemployment - dewisant - 06-06-2017 I took a voluntary lay off from the company I have worked for for over 30 years. I will be old enough to retire on 1 Aug 2017, but I have to play the unemployment game until then. Any suggestions? Unemployment - DavidHume - 06-06-2017 What do you mean? Tips on applying to the required number of jobs without the danger of getting hired? Unemployment - davewill - 06-06-2017 What game? If you're on unemployment you're supposed to look for work and be ready to take a job. If you aren't, then you shouldn't be getting it. Unemployment - DavidHume - 06-06-2017 davewill Wrote:What game? If you're on unemployment you're supposed to look for work and be ready to take a job. If you aren't, then you shouldn't be getting it. It actually depends on the situation. In Washington, members of certain unions are exempt from the looking for work aspect while on unemployment. Or those enrolled in certain training programs. I can't imagine the training programs would be approved for someone within a year of retirement, though. Although there are some Workforce classes that teach interview skills and resume/cover letter writing that can count for some of the weekly documentation requirements. Unemployment - dewisant - 06-06-2017 I have been a union member for over 30 years. F-them. I could conceivably live another 40 some years so why would any retraining be a waste of money? I have met many people over the years who already have 1, 2, 3, 4, and even 5 pensions in the pocket and this one will be my first pension. WA just has a limited list of skills that are available for the training option and in some cases specific programs that can be used. If there's something of interest on the list and you can otherwise qualify, then totally, go for it! It's been about 7 years since I have dealt with WA unemployment, but back then there was information on what options were available in the online account. You can also go to one of the Worksorce locations. I ended up with a bunch of grant money to pay for 12 months of lab science courses and a swing shift Thursday-Sunday gig.
