intro and saylor question - hmiller - 02-07-2018
Hi all! I'm a new member here, just starting out on this degree completion journey, though I've been contemplating it for some time
I have very few college credits to transfer in, maybe 8?, though I do have a certification that should transfer in for a few credits (paramedic).
I have been looking at all the info and my plan for now is:
College Algebra- ALEKS
All the rest of my generals: some combination of saylor, shmoop, and test out
I do not have a concentration or degree specific plan yet, just going to get started with the generals because I need all of them.
I'm wondering what the general thought is on saylor. They have so many courses and for cheap, but are they more trouble than they are worth? Opinions please, thanks!

ALEKS lost ACE accreditation on 8/31/2017, so unless you completed the course before then, you'll need to find another source for College Algebra.

Saylor is worth a try. They have some issues with the content of their courses being uneven. Some courses are nice and straightforward, others are repetitive and time consuming, and broken. Luckily you can start the course for free, and bail out if you don't like it. You can even study in your own way and just take the final for credit if you wish.

With all the ACE options (Saylor, Shmoop, Study, etc.) CLEP doesn't get much love here lately, BUT, there are free vouchers through Modern States that allow you to get your fee covered. So, you might want to consider trying a CLEP or two!

I've taken Principles of Microeconomics and Introduction to Psychology through Saylor Academy. The Psychology direct credit exam was more difficult than I expected and was not what I would consider "consistent" with an Introductory course. The Microeconomics direct credit exam was a little more palatable, though still challenging. The upside is that the content is free and the testing fees are minimal. I've also taken CLEP tests studied with and paid for by Modern States Education Alliance. I'd definitely look into it if I were you.

Saylor is a mixed bag - I've heard Marketing is a good course, but Management isn't.
But you can't beat the price with a stick!

I didn't end up taking Principles of Mkting at Saylor, but I did their practice exam. I think it was a lot easier than the CLEP. I took the CLEP, which was kind of a waste of time since I could have done Saylor.
I took MIS at Saylor, but note that what they call MIS doesn't come in as MIS at TESU. It comes in as a LL CIS course. Saylor has some other course that comes in as MIS (despite not having a name that's similar). I thought MIS was a decent course through them.
Be sure that you are attending a school that takes NCCRS, such as TESU, if you take the courses which aren't ACE-approved. (And of course be sure to only take Direct Credit courses.)
