Trump moves to cancel student loan debt for disabled veterans - decimon - 04-24-2018

The Department of Education will partner with the Department of Veteran Affairs to identify disabled student loan borrowers who are eligible for debt forgiveness.

Such borrowers will be notified in the mail and will also receive a Total and Permanent Disability Discharge application, which if approved allows certain borrowers with severe physical impairments to erase all student loan debt.

A lot of things have been getting better for veterans in the last few years.

Glad to see this. If anyone should have their student loan debt forgiven, it's HAS to be a disabled vet. Thanks so much for sharing this!  Smile

You're welcome.

I'm an ancient vet but all my scars are from civilian life. The troops that gave so much should indeed be at the head of the line.

I read the article.  Any student who gets into $223,000 in student loan debt deserves it!

Yeah that's a crazy amount and I have no idea how that happens!

Allowing people to get loans that they clearly can't repay is not good.

It seems that most of that debt was from a law school he attended after an Army hitch and then working as a lawyer. His injuries occurred after returning to the Army and doing time in Afghanistan.

Just to add to what you said, the school he attended (Cooley Law School) is a private, not-for-profit. I think that point has relevance as many seem to think not-for-profit somehow means "affordably priced" or "low cost".

Here's what the article says about his service and the injuries he suffered:

"Milzarski said he led 24 soldiers on 244 combat missions and 43 engagements with the enemy. Five soldiers were killed and one seriously injured. He was awarded a Purple Heart for a ricocheted bullet that hit him in the face during combat in Afghanistan. Among his 18 awards is a Meritorious Service medal."

OK, I still say any student who gets into $223,000 in student loan debt deserves it!

It only applies to Federal Student Loans, so the maximum of the example $223,000 student loan debt would be $88,000 forgiven.  So he will still be a great amount of debt (over $200k remaining debt) - which I think is the point of what Life Long Learning is saying (correct me if I'm wrong).  No one should allow themselves to get into that much student debt in the first place. It will however be a blessing for others.
